Review of Sonya
Daniel K. Seward's "Sonya" is an incredible science fiction novel that follows the adventures and journey of Sonya to the "center of the universe" and back.
The book, written in the form of a journal, focuses on Sonya, a young girl from Minnesota who stays with her mother. One late night after Sonya encounters an alien spaceship, she is invited to join four alien races on a journey to the "center of the universe" (the center of everything) to find the "truth". After their trip to the center and back, they returned changed. What exactly changed? You'll have to read to find out. Barely months after her return, Sonya is soon drawn into a political conspiracy, one that even threatens her life.
One of the numerous reasons I enjoyed the book was its plot. Not only was the story unique (a science fiction novel with elements of extraterrestrial politics), but the author's delivery was also superb. Another reason I enjoyed the book was its pacing; it wasn't too fast nor too slow, and this allowed for maximum character development. I must also commend the author's ability to paint a vivid and detailed illustration of places (a perfect example is evident when he described the radiation-destroyed planet they encountered on their way to the center of everything), events, people, or other creatures; this helps the reader easily grasp the situation of things in his mind.
As much as I have various reasons to like the book, the book has a minor weakness. The book has a slow start, and some impatient readers might be forced to drop it after a few pages due to its mostly uneventful beginning, thereby missing out on a great story. I must also commend the editing of the book, as I noticed no significant grammatical or spelling errors capable of disrupting my reading experience. Things some readers may consider errors in the book were just the way a specific race of aliens spoke.
Overall, I'd rate Daniel K. Seward's "Sonya" 4 out of 5 stars for its unique story, perfect pacing, and superb editing. I deducted one star because of the minor weakness I stated in the previous paragraph.
I'd recommend the book to adults and young adults who enjoy science fiction novels and books about the universe and the extraterrestrials beyond it.
