Review of Call of Aetherterra
After Arianna Riddler's mum died, she packed up and moved from New York to Montana. On a quiet walk with her dog one day, she had a strange encounter that confused her. Following that encounter, more unexplainable events kept happening until she found herself in an entirely different world where the rules were different, and an evil force lurked in wait. Only one person could destroy the evil force. With many difficulties in store, would she be able to fulfill her destiny?
Call of Aetherterra by K. N. Corwin was a fascinating tale of bravery and courage. The main character was thrown into a situation she was unprepared for, and everybody seemed to expect her to know what to do and shoulder the burden she found herself saddled with. How the author portrayed the main character's personality was one of my favorite aspects of the book. Arianna (the main character) could have been any other average person until she found herself in a reality different from the one she had always lived in. The transition between the two phases didn't feel awkward, as she was given time to adjust while building her resilience.
The book was professionally edited. However, the plot was cliche. The book would have been greatly improved if the author had added a unique or interesting twist to the overused "chosen one" storyline or tried to develop the story better.
There were too many plot holes; the author needed to take the time to flesh out the story. For instance, Darren's presence in the story didn't tie into anything. He just appeared out of the blue one day and connected deeply with the main character, giving the impression that they were almost soulmates. Then he disappeared after one scene and reappeared close to the end of the book, in an unsignificant role.
The book focused less on Arianna's core purpose and more on her relationships with those she encountered. This book could be described as more of a love story between Arianna and Silas than a quest for a people's salvation from an evil force.
The author writes well and has the solid foundations for a good story. If more details can be added to some parts (for example, the world-building) and some work is done on the setting and composition, the book will be significantly improved. I'm rating it 4 out of 5 stars because of the lapses. I hope to see significant improvement in subsequent installments. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys fantasy books.
