Peter Ivey introduces you to Micheal or “Mick” a young man from a small fishing village known as Priddy. Having moved his way up the ranks he becomes a sergeant of a boarding party for the Golden Maria. While engaged in taking hold of another ship everything suddenly changes for Mick. It is clear he’s not a fan of killing others, though he has no problem doing so. At a crucial point in a dangerous battle he finds himself with powers and talent he didn’t know he had.
His first portal brings him to a world he has never known of. He was a man from a small village but his reaction to portals and other worlds was a bit glossed over. This made it hard to connect with the character. It’s in this new world he first meets, Stranger, an overly confident man who knows much more then he’s letting onto. He quickly realizes there is much more at play then just a gain of unique talents. He has an inner battle with himself on continuing his nomadic life style or searching for others. Mick continues to jump from world to world, searching for other like him as well as answers to his sudden change.
Little does he know there are those working against him, with their own goals in mind. A power hungry group called the Kingdom fight him at every step. They want him on their side and will stop at little to convince him. They seem to have the same hidden talents but he knows they are very different within.
He struggles to make alliances with others before having all the details. How can he trust someone when their motives are unknown. Mick finds himself battling wolf like creatures, an ogre and the ever elusive Stranger. He realizes there is good and evil among the humans and those like himself, whatever he may be. It’s this struggle of right and wrong within him throughout the book that helped me grow attached to the character.
Unfortunately, I could only give the novel 2 out of 4 stars. With a little bit of proof reading this could easily be a higher rating. The plot and mysterious characters were enough to keep me invested in the story and willing to work around the errors. In the beginning there was a confusing quality to some of the descriptions, towards the end I felt like I was missing key pieces of information. The ending was on the abrupt side, you’re brought full circle but the choppiness was a let down. There were plenty of well worked out fight scenes with the right amount of blood and gore, without over doing it. Anyone looking for an action packed sci-fi could easily enjoy this.
