It’s 2271 CE, and Marvi Talpur and her twin brother, Sumra, have successfully executed time travel using drones and robots. When one of these drones accidentally electrocutes a member of an ancient civilization crucial to its future development, Marvi and her brother will have to figure out a way to mend the adverse ripple effect this has caused. Marvi will have to travel back in time to make things right again. Meanwhile, in 3000 BCE, 16-year-old Maya lives in a nameless village where she loves watching the sunrise. One of these mornings, she sees an object suddenly appear from the sky with a person falling into the river. She goes to save the person, and the past and future collide when Marvi and Maya meet. What will become of them? Will Marvi be able to repair the damage and help Maya’s village? These burning questions and more are answered in the sci-fi/fantasy Maya’s Quest by Shireen Magedin.

It was very fascinating learning about the Indus Valley civilization. I especially found the Glossary at the end of the book very helpful, as it helped me understand some of the clothing, food, culture, and language peppered throughout the book. I liked the emphasis on the theme of family. Maya had the constant support of her father and cousin, Amar, while Marvi always had Sumra looking out for her. The togetherness and unity of the people of Kukkutarma were also beautiful to see. I found it fascinating that kajal, henna, and bhang (an edible made from the cannabis plant) have been in existence and used as early as 3000 BC!

I don’t have anything to dislike about this book. Although there were some errors, they were quite minimal and not enough to reduce a star. As a result, I happily award Maya’s Quest by Shireen Magedin a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book for free from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review. Thank you to Shireen Magedin for the free copy.
