Review of The Lightning Child
The Lightning Child by Quinn Lamothe is a sci-fi/fantasy book that brings together a unique blend of the elements of fantasy. In this book, we are greeted by different paranormal beings, each bringing unique interests to the book.
There is a sudden ambush on Lunaria and her brothers, Genra and Hernna, by the Wolf-Ones while they are out hunting. The Wolf-Ones held a grudge against Queen Ithagmir for preventing them from living outside of their forests, but was that the only reason for this grudge? King Tharguur has already set a plan to overthrow the queen and will not go back on his plan. Was his plan successful? What instigated these plans he had in motion? Was there some underlying greed behind all of this? Find out by reading this book.
One standout aspect of the book is the plot. It is something I have never read anywhere. I had expected a story about werewolves, as suggested by the book cover, but nothing could have prepared me for the creatures I met in this book. We had a child with lightning powers, courtesy of her father, and one with four arms. There was just a lot of content in this book. Because of the kind of characters I was dealt, my imagination ran wild. I started thinking about what new creature I would see next. Were there headless horsemen, mages, and so on?
As much as I loved the creativity of Quinn Lamothe, there are still some negative aspects to the book. The book was poorly edited, and it hindered my enjoyment of the book. There were missing words, misspelt words, and so on. This made it hard to enjoy the book since it had many unfamiliar ideas and names, for example, the Wolf-Ones. That is a name I had not heard before. The book was also slow-paced. There were too many activities and unnecessary dialogue that the book could have done without. The end was also drawn out, which, in turn, made it difficult to get through.
Considering all this, I give this book four out of five stars. The storyline was good and deserves four stars; however, the negatives hindered it from receiving a perfect rating. I recommend this book to people interested in fantasy and science fiction novels.
