“Force without Form: Book 1 of the Stipulation Duology” by John P. Safranski is a science novel that delves into the intricate weave of the universe and the looming consequences of technological evolution on humanity. The story centers on three powerful siblings—DeLamore, NoMáDae, and PaGoll—who govern different aspects of reality: control, artificial intelligence, and dreams. They command unseen, shape-shifting beings that can influence events across the universe. However, their powers are overseen by DeLamore, the ultimate ruler.

The novel introduces three rogue entities—Doan, Ducane, and Marclone—who rebel against the established order, causing havoc on Earth. These beings, driven by personal vendettas, descend to Earth, manipulating human affairs and setting off a chain of catastrophic events. Their interference brings chaos, leading to devastating consequences for humanity.
Central to the narrative is Lorne, a man who has spent a century away from Earth, searching for Ducane, the Handler, who killed his son. When Lorne is summoned back to Earth to combat a new threat, he reluctantly returns, bringing with him his trusted comrades, Gairn and LaTour. Their reappearance shocks those living in the future, as they were once considered legendary figures.

Lorne's mission becomes even more complex when he meets his grandchildren and allies with Alina Vexal, the leader of Lone Wolf. Together, they work to protect their community from the impending danger posed by the Handler and his assassin, Marclone. As they prepare their defenses, the rogue beings continue their onslaught, leading to tragic losses and widespread fear.

The novel explores themes of power, technology, and the enduring human spirit. It weaves together elements of science fiction, fantasy, and metaphysical exploration, ultimately questioning the balance between free will and the unseen powers that shape our destiny.

The novel explores the influence of unseen forces on the future of humanity, yet it remains grounded in the struggles of its characters, particularly Lorne, who embodies resilience and the fight for justice across time. One element that particularly resonated with me was how the book portrays the consequences of technological advancement through the character of NoMáDae, who governs artificial intelligence. For example, the intervention by NoMáDae, who removes Growler's soul and temporarily takes Lorne's, highlights the novel's central theme: the profound impact of technology on humanity's fate. This moment encapsulates the duality of technology as both a force for progress and a potential harbinger of destruction, echoing real-world concerns about the future of AI.

The novel also impressed me with its complex characters, such as Lorne, who returns from a century-long search for revenge only to be recalled to protect his people. His reunion with his grandchildren, who inherit his telepathic abilities, adds a personal dimension to the broader cosmic struggle, making the story relatable despite its vast scope.

I'd rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, as I found nothing to dislike in it. It has been exceptionally well-edited, too. I appreciate the writing style of the novel because it is easy to understand. Though the message of the novel comes at the tail end, the suspense created by the writing style is commendable. The novel teaches us the importance of teamwork, as seen in the way Lorne returned to the future where he once ruled, demonstrating a leadership style that made everyone feel important.

"Force without Form" is ideal for readers who enjoy science fiction with a philosophical edge, particularly those interested in the interplay between technology, free will, and the unseen forces that shape our existence. This book is a thought-provoking journey for anyone intrigued by the potential futures that await humanity as we continue to advance technologically.
