Review of My Nebula
Due to Josiah's service as the commissioner of Cincinnati, the Mellis Famiky offered him and his family an invitation to migrate to the Lunar Plane. Othniel Goodman, who desired to follow in his father's footsteps, pursued a career as a detective in the Lunar Space Station Police Department.
He receives a new opportunity for his life when he becomes a member of Time Travelers’ Administration (TTA), an organization whose main goal is to investigate time anomalies and any phenomenon that may threaten the time-space continuum. In My Nebula by Othello Gooden Jr., Othniel and his tough colleagues travel through space as well as alternate realities to solve cases.
There are positive aspects to this book. The book is science fiction that is set in a utopian world, the Lunar Plane. As it befits a sci-fi, My Nebula did not fail to incorporate inter-galaxy travels, battles between aliens, travels into the past, and across the multiverse. It was an unending story of action and fantasy entwined with mysteries. Just as readers wonder about the purpose of TTA, they are thrown into further contemplation about who could be behind the 2021 Evanston Massacre. The story is weaved into an unending chain of mystery and suspense, where allies can turn into foes and vice versa. The plot is dynamic and just kept surprising me. At some point, the author incorporated the story of Atlantis, the lost city.
However, the book also had negative aspects. The book was not professionally edited. There are grammar errors and misspellings in it. Also, the story was not properly executed. It felt like the author has so many ideas and was in a haste to write them all down. I was confused a lot whenever the author spoke about the characters' traveling through alternate realities, whether they were in their reality or not, and whether or not they were in the past. In chapter 8, the author referred to Silas without clarifying he was actually referring to Othniel's clone until later in the chapter. Ivon Immanuel, who sometimes existed as Lord Emmanuel in some realities also confused me.
At some point, Val referred to Mwongo, and I struggled with identifying who the character was. More so, Val's backstory was not clear and did not help my reading experience. Perhaps a list of characters and the names of their clones, if any, included at the beginning of the book would be very helpful. An indication of when characters switch from the past to the present or from a place in space to another would also go a long way.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because of the flaws I pointed out in the last two paragraphs above. I recommend this book to lovers of science fiction, fantasy, or mystery stories, as well as detective novels.
