Passion of an Angel by Suran Fant (spoilers)

Post by TJsmama »

I enjoyed this book for its lovely prose and because it's a bit different from the norm in the urban fantasy/paranormal romance genres. This is the first story about Eden in PR/UF I've ever read and I loved it and the little twist the author gave it. Unfortunately, there were just one too many editing issues. In a 20-something page novella, the amount of errors I found just isn't reasonable.

The book started out beautifully; pretty words and descriptive prose. The author painted a vivid picture of the moment of creation and I was sucked into his world from the first paragraph. Then there were more pretty words and descriptive prose, and I started getting bored. I have a short attention span. I like pretty prose and good descriptions, yes, but if it's drawn out for more than half a page, you lose me as a reader. And when that happens, I start looking for faults in the story/writing.

And there were a lot.

Sentences with scrambled words such as,
How could this beauty appear in this world, how it was possible to imagine such miracle as she?

And,
The kiss was a drug, pulling both them into its claw.

And dialogue that didn't make any sense no matter how many times I read it such as,
Whom Father will love us as much as you?
And
The angel murmured his teeth gritted:

It also gave me the opportunity to highlight passages such as,
the angel found it hard to believe that what stood before him wasn’t a picture, it was real. It was the beginning of life.
And include notes in the margin such as, "God invented pictures before he created life. Glad someone's got their priorities straight."

"Beautiful” Said the angel. For him she was the most wonderful creature in the whole of space.
Followed immediately by,
He approached the woman without saying anything and held out his hand.
So, did he or did he not say anything?

Then this happened,
Finally his hand reached her cheek and he felt the warmth and the softness of her skin. A new feeling was created between them, a new invisible bond. He felt a passionate desire to taste her, every single place, from head to toe. The words had lost their power, the time lengthened, almost stopped.

And when I read,
She propped her legs behind his back and crossed them, put both arms around his neck to pull him closer.

But this happened,
Then she felt something crawling inside her from between her legs.

This is all very understandable, although I do think the author should hire an editor. According to the author's note at the end of the book, Passion of an Angel is the English translation of the original story.

Overall, I did enjoy the novella. I loved seeing things through Lucifer's eyes and this story made him really relatable. I'll enjoy seeing him change into the being he is known as today and the decisions that lead him down that road.
