Orion's Spur Book 1 Demeter by Alan Hansen is the first book in a teen science-fiction adventure series. The plot follows a group of teens as they are unknowingly led away from their home on Earth to a planet called Demeter under the guise of a year abroad in "Europe." The group includes 8th-grader Ryder, his younger sister Debbie, Ryder's romantic interest Cynthia, and four other teens, Randy, Joel, Athena, and Becky.

The author explored the topic of bullying when Ryder was picked on at a school dance. The bullying ended in a vicious brawl, resulting in Ryder, Debbie, and Cynthia transferring to a new school where they met the rest of their group. Ryder also encounters bullies on Demeter who look down on Terrans (or people from Earth). However, each of the teens uses their skills and personality to help get the group out of a sticky situation. The author uses this situation to show readers that everyone's unique personality is crucial. We should celebrate differences, not mock them.

My favorite aspect of this novel is the way the author lays out the mystery of Demeter. The author leaves little hints throughout the book regarding where the classmates are going, the importance of Demeter, and their role on the planet. The reader finds out the answers to these mysteries alongside Ryder and his classmates. The author does an excellent job of maintaining plot twists until the very end.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This novel is an excellent book for teen readers who enjoy science fiction, mystery, and action. The book is never dull, with action on nearly every page. Although there is danger throughout the book, the author does not include excessive violence or anything else that would be inappropriate for teen readers. I found nothing to dislike in this book beyond a couple of minor grammatical errors. Otherwise, the book was well-written and edited.

Indeed, there is something special about unity in diversity. I am wondering what the teens were picked and what qualifications led to their selection. Also, my curiosity is piqued to know why Demeter was chosen. Thanks for the brilliant review, @Kelsey Roy.

I always love reading books like this in which the author drops little hints here and there and once it's exposed the fun of realising that wow so that's what it means. Sign me up for this book
