Elgin is one of the last survivors of the post apocalyptic world he lives in. With a .357 Magnum and his dog Lucky, he braves the desert of Arizona in hopes of prolonging life for as long as they can and making it to “Lost Angeles”. Though the world regresses and erodes around them, Elgin stays true to the good he harvests deep down, hoping that virtue isn’t dead like the numerous skeletons he sees on his journey. As he travels he runs into savages that don’t share his same views on life, and that have no problem in neglecting him any mercy. Though, it doesn’t take long before he meets certain people that join him on his expedition, including a gorgeous girl named Gitty, a peculiarly quiet and gun savvy man named Roy, and an unexpected ally by the name of Ramiro. Good thing too, because the voyage he embarks on is not one he would be capable of doing on his own. Along with his physical battles, he must also fight the battles within his mind. Elgin must fight for his dreams or risk dying for them. What he finds in California, however, is not what he had in mind. How far will a man's good go when evil has overcome what's left of the world?
This story is filled with lovable characters that will have you rooting for them all the way until the end, as well as dark antagonists that show the depravity of humanity on the brink of extinction. Grewal conscientiously captures the world and its inhabitants when the only thing left is predator and prey. It is honest and hopeful, almost like reading a diary. Filled with danger, some romance, suspense, and twists that are not to be missed. You will be reading word after word with anticipation for what shocking turn might happen next.
I loved the author’s writing. I felt every word, smelled every description and imagined every idea that he transcribed into sentences. Grewal has a real talent for writing and it is seen in this flawless story. I don’t remember seeing any grammar errors that I noticed, although the narrator did talk in slang because that’s all he knew and was who he was as a character. This author has mastered diction and characterization in ways I didn’t expect to see. He keeps you intrigued with beautifully worded scenes and narration. The only thing I didn't necessarily like was the, at times, crude material that he added, but even that wasn't enough to turn me away from this story.
I give it a 4 out of 4 stars. I gave it a four because the author writes beautifully and appropriately to the context of the characters. No less because he didn’t make any mistakes that I caught and there was little not to love about the book. Grewal knows how to write effectively and is far from being an amateur. I anticipate the rest of the trilogy with exuberance and high expectations for what adventures the sequels might hold. Just in case anyone was wondering there is language and sexual material that may not be suitable for children, but that fits to the storyline and characters. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys well-written books in general. It is easily appealable to all ranges of readers from those just starting to those who have read their fair share of writings over the years. It is an unparalleled story that will keep you wanting more.
