The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Post by Iulia Mi »

What I loved most about this book was the atmosphere: I felt it had just the right amount of creepy in it. It is not a horror book, as is none of Gaiman's novels, but it tends to go that way because of the settings and the characters that he chooses.

Nobody Owen wandered into a graveyard as a child, after a man killed his whole family. He grew up and was educated by ghosts. Naturally, all sort of trouble comes out of that on the way.

It is a very simple plot. In the beginning I must confess I found it rather suspicious and did not want to read it because it sounded to me like a children's book. It is meant to be one, originally it has been written for the author's daughter. And one might argue that it can be set alongside Caroline on the kid's literature shelf.

But I really enjoyed it, on one side because it had the same style and dialogue manner so characteristic for Gaiman, but also because (I must admit) I do like a good children's story sometimes. I am weird this way. :)
