Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garci [Spoilers]

Post by Jordanbates91 »

Purchased: Barnes and Noble - $9.99
My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

What's it all about?
The town of Gatlin isn’t very fond of outsiders, so when Lena Duchannes comes into tow everyone seems to be out on edge. Ethan Wate does it even better by stirring up the tension when he decides to befriend Lena. These two seem to not be able tog et enough of each other and with strange things always happening when they are together it seem to be more than fate at play. A wonderful young adult book, with some paranormal romance to intrigue the reader while on a fascinating journey through the struggles of finding acceptance of those around you.

The Best Parts:
This novel does a great job with setting the town for the south. Yes it takes all of the cliches out there and puts them all together, but in reality Gatlin is the south. This isn’t just about outsiders coming into this southern environment, but the future or in this case, the present, coming into this town that is so focused on the past. The social trials that are shown in this coincide with that of the Civil War which this novel focuses on. All of the towns people trying to find a scape goat to push all of their hatred onto and push them out of town, just as during the war each side trying to push the other out of their rightful homes.

The romance in this novel is definitely that of teenagers, but it is extremely realistic. They don’t just jump their bones and get it on.. They actually care about each other and want to learn more about one another before continuing their relationship. Yes, there is a form of Romeo and Juliet going on in this novel, as Amma and Macon try to keep Ethan and Lena away form each other, but we all know from history itself that that isn’t possible.

The Worst Parts:
There wasn’t a lot that I didn’t like about this novel. I would have preferred more insight to Ethan’s life before Lena, but it seems we only get some glimpses. It would have rounded out his character a little more. All the characters in the book definitely played a purpose, and none seemed too dull to handle. Some of the lengths of the chapters were a little exaggerated and could have been broken up accordingly, but it didn’t discourage me from reading them.

Final thoughts ...

I absolutely recommend this novel to any young adult or adult. It is full with fun, adventure, love, hate, sadness, and happiness. If you have already seen the movie, like I had, I still say read the book. Because just like very time, the book is better than the movie. There is so much that is different and was changed. I was gasping at points because I was thinking something else happened and then plot twist! It was such a great ride and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series.
