I personally like when series books keep the reader up to speed on the characters and plot in subsequent installments. I read a book recently that was the 3rd book in a mystery series. I understood the mystery, but there were a few inside jokes about some of the characters that I didn't get.

Yikes! That is always really frustrating for me, especially in longer series where it's pretty common to read them out of order.

This book was especially difficult because the reader was left entirely in the dark. If I had read the first book even just a month or two ago, I'd have been lost, I think.
