Chasing Payne by Chantel Seabrook is a Science Fiction/Fantasy novel set in the continental US about "Metamorphs", or humans with shape-shifting abilities. These individuals shape-shift into powerful animals, such as lions and jaguars, and are governed by the Therian Council. Metamorphs live among humans, however must keep their abilities secret at all costs.

The novel focuses primarily on Chase Payne and Lora Oliver, and is written alternatively from each of their perspectives. Chase is a seasoned agent working directly under the Therian Council alongside Lora's brother, and has always viewed Lora as a younger sister. Lora is a new agent and has been assigned to work under the supervision of Chase, and has been pining after Chase since she was young. While working closely together to solve a complex case, it becomes harder for Chase and Lora to deny their feelings for each other. As they give in to their attraction, secrets come to light and bad guys come to fight, which will change their lives forever.

This is a very fast-paced story that continuously keeps readers on the edge of their seats trying to figure out what or who is causing "spontaneous morphing" within the human population. The action scenes are not only well-written, well thought out and downright entertaining, but also consistent. When the reader witnesses Chase or Lora change into their animal form, it is written the same way for both, which helps the reader understand the morphing process is the same for all metamorphs; albeit a little redundant.

While the action scenes are entertaining, the romance between Chase and Lora is dull. Where their physical relationship is red hot, their emotional relationship is ice cold. There is little communication between the two of them, which leads to some tough and completely avoidable scenarios. Considering the reader gets an insight into each of the characters, it's frustrating to know what each of them is thinking, yet witness their refusal to discuss their feelings for each other.

A primary concern is that the story ends abruptly without a conclusion to the main conflict within the book. Although this book is marketed primarily as Science Fiction/Fantasy, there is a strong romantic theme which overpowers the storyline. Chase and Lora have undeniable chemistry, however if a reader is not interested in reading a Romance novel, it would be best to avoid this book. Readers should also be aware that this book is not a standalone within its series, and will need to continue reading the supplemental stories that come after this one.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
