Official Review: The Wielder Diaries: My Crystal

Imagine waking up in a warm bed. Then, a man you don't know starts talking to you very excitedly. It's obvious he's happy to see you but, who is he? Next he, without ceremony, picks you up and carries you downstairs to a room full of people who all rejoice at seeing you. However, all you can ask over and over again is "who are you"? Then the thought occurs to you; do you know who YOU are? What would you do?
If you are Kayla the Saqui from The Wielder Diaries this could prove to be very daunting indeed. Kayla is a twelve year old girl with amazing powers, but no memory of who she is or how to use them. It is essential for the sake of her kingdom and all that she cares about that she does remember, for there is a terrible danger that only she can stop. Luckily, she has the Folk-kin; a strange book that can help her. How can a book help you ask? You'll have to read to find out.
This book was an exciting read with a real cliffhanger ending. Since it is the beginning of a series, the ending was no real surprise, but unnerving nonetheless. So many unanswered questions that lead the reader searching for the next book. This book takes you into the life of Kayla and you are learning all about her right along with her. I love how it was written; allowing you to witness certain events through the eyes of several characters. This book jumps from past to present seamlessly and without confusion. You get a feel for what most of the characters are like as people as well as how they feel about Kayla. It is very creative how the author was able to write from different perspectives and keep each character their own individual. Also, the book was filled with a variety of settings just as flavorful as the characters.
My only complaint about this book really is that near the beginning Kayla is living with a pride of lions. Because of this, there are a few moments that read practically right out of Disney's The Lion King movie. I almost expected Mufasa to appear in the clouds and talk to Kayla at one point. However, the story line development moves from this quickly and by the time Kayla reaches the age of seven in the book, all is forgiven.
In conclusion, I give The Wielder Diaries: My Crystal by Ashley Scheller 4 out of 4 stars. This fantasy story is probably best suited for a preteen to young adult audience, but I (who am hardly a young adult myself) enjoyed it immensely and can't wait for the next installment. I recommend it for anyone that likes magic, animals, and adventure.
