Black Night by Lori Gordon is the first novel of her “The Lost Night” trilogy. It is a science fiction story about a girl named Sienna James who is from a planet called Tosco. For the first 18 years of her life, she has led a perfect but very sheltered life. Her father, Nicholas James, is a very powerful man who rules Tosco and many people fear him, but he dotes on his wife and daughter. Many years ago, Tosco was involved in a war with a rival planet called Ryder. Nicholas James rescued a young boy named Johnny Black and raised him as his own. Since then, Sienna and Johnny grew up together and became best friends. On her 18th birthday, Johnny decides to take her to visit his home planet Ryder. There she meets Marc Jensen who ultimately becomes her first love. Marc in turn falls in love with Sienna, but there is a dark, sinister reason for his motivation to be with her.
It is no secret that Sienna’s father has a lot of enemies. His biggest enemy is the evil ruler of Ryder who would do anything to destroy Tosco, Nicholas James, and his family. Sienna is eventually tricked into going to Ryder and is kidnapped and forced to marry the ruler’s grandson. Johnny Black, who has secretly been in love with Sienna, risks his life to rescue her.
I really enjoyed reading this book. In the beginning I was hesitant about whether or not I was going to like the story because there was a lot of telling and not enough showing. Within the first couple of pages, Sienna was shown to visit Ryder, meet Marc, date him, and then fall in love with him. It seemed like the author was trying to rush through the beginning of Sienna and Marc’s relationship so that she could get to the heart of the story faster.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book really surprised me. I am a huge fan of science fiction stories and there were a lot of details about the different spaceships and ways to travel to the different planets. I loved the authors’ descriptions of the planets and their atmospheres, and how to survive in them. I thought it was very creative and enjoyable to read. The reason I did not give the story a full 4 stars was because there were a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes. They were not so bad that I could not understand the story but there were times when it got distracting.
Overall, I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys reading science fiction and suspense. There were a lot of twists and turns that shocked me and revelations that I never saw coming. I also recommend this book to anybody who enjoys romance. The development of the relationship between Sienna and Johnny was very sweet and it is impossible not to root for them. They constantly faced harrowing obstacles but I love how they stuck together to overcome them.
