Review: Grimm Diaries prequels 1-6 by Cameron Jace
This book is about how the Grimm brothers and their descendants told lies about the fairy tale characters, and rewrote them to how they saw it. However the fairytale characters are real, and the grimm brothers and thier descendants have trapped them within their dreams, and so once every hundred years they are awakened. The evil fairytale characters seek revenge and a way to take over while the good fairytale characters seek to tell the real world about the lies the grimms have told over the years. And so thats where the diaries come in to play . From diaries written in the pov of some of the most memorable fairytale characters in history ,this tale by Cameron Jace weaves the stories we once new as children into a totally new and refreshing tale.
i came upon this book on kindle for free, because I like the different adaptations of fairy tales. At first i thought it was going to be the same as any other Ya fairy tale book out , but it was surprisingly different. At first it was kind of slow and their were too many onomatopoeia's that to me slowed the story down at times. But i loved how he gave even the secondary characters, and characters we never would imagine being in a fairy tale a pov . We get to see what they are thinking, and why they play an important role into the story. I love his usage of epistolary novel format . And in my opinion he explored it perfectly. Well i have to say out of most free kindle books this book did wonders for me, intrigued and entranced me to continue the series.

I don't necessarily agree that "The evil fairytale characters seek revenge and a way to take over while the good fairytale characters seek to tell the real world about the lies the grimms have told over the years." I believe that each character does have a malicious side to them, and yes the Grimm's have "buttered up" the stories in order to tell the children. But when you find out the real story of Snow White; why Peter Pan has a bigger role in the "fairytale" realm than expected; and a surprising twist on nursery rhymes that every parent thought was as innocent as the tales told by Disney; we find that we must question these stories.
Allowing our mind to accept the truth that these so called "princesses" were exactly the opposite fascinates me; and I must say this is a definite must read in my mind.

These 6 short stories are the prequels to the Brother Grimm Diaries. Each one is from the diary of a different person and tells stories from their perspective. The way the stories intertwine and tell a darker version of fairy tales is just pure genius. I absolutely loved these prequels and am definitely looking forward to reading the books in this series. The author writes in such a way that you are drawn into the stories. You get to know the characters, their back stories, what happened to make them seem like the person we thought they were. Pure magic.
Book 1 is about Snow White and is told from the "Evil Queens" presepective. She tells a story of how deceived we all are about Snow White and her innocence, as she eas much darker than the stories told. The true reason for the glass casket, and just who are those 7 dwarfs really? The Queen of Sorrows sets about trying to remind the Lost 7 of who they are so that they may escape Dreamland.
Book 2 is about Cinderella and is written in a diary by a descendant of the Grimm Brothers, Alice. She is traveling to meet the real Cinderella. In Venice she meets Loki, a Dreamhunter, who will take her into Dreamland to save a woman named Bianca, who is to be burned for witchcraft. But Alice cannot let that happen as Bianca is pregnant with a very special baby. One who is prophesied to play a major role in the fairy tale wars.
Book 3 is written from Peter Pans diary. He tells a story about his best day ever, getting to wake up his live from her 100 year sleep. But it wasn't with a kiss, it was with a beautiful ceremony that starts with Peter standing over Count Dacula's grave.
In the meantime, the Queen of Sorrows comes to Pan, asking about the items she believes belongs to the Lost 7. Will Peter help her figure out who the Lost 7 are? Is Peter one of them?
Book 4 is told by Little Red Riding Hood. Red tells us about her mother and the Fortune Cookie Tree, and the day she meets a strange, pale girl at her door. Red tells about her 16th birthday and how she finally learned what her mother did in the Black Forest everyday. Along her way in the forest she meets the big bad wolf. What will come of Red in the Black Forest?
Book 5 is from the diary of Dr Feelgood (aka the Devil). He starts his story off with "Once upon a time, in hell..." and begins telling about what an awful day in hell it was. He tells us the story of the murderous Elizabeth and her "quite contrary" daughter. The havoc they wrecked because of the evil splinters in their eyes. But why is Lucifer worried about the birth of Snow White? And how does he know the Queen of Sorrows?
Book 6 is from the diary of Prince Charming. The Prince starts his story by telling us about the two women who were the source of many tales the Brothers Grimm wrote about. They are always writing to ask him why he loves "her", but today they just want want to know why the apples are red.
