The Windup Girl

Post by Petra Antwick »

This book, which is a sci-fi about multiple characters, including a girl called "the windup girl," who is genetically enhanced, is amazing! It also underscores current environmental and political concerns, and I would say that it has a hidden message about discrimination. One of the essential questions in this book is "What does it mean to be human?" with a response that a person is a person as long as they have emotions, or at least that's what I got out of it. So my question for all of you reading this post is "What does it mean to be human?"

I LOVED this book. It's almost post-apocalyptic, but not quite. The world order has been all shaken up and the "calorie companies" (meaning those who control the food) have screwed up the planet royally through basically biological warfare against the other companies.

Fair warning though, there is also some graphic sexual abuse in this book. The titular character is a sex worker who is also a marginal member of society, so she gets mistreated for the pleasure of the patrons.
