Official Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Post by briellanoelle »

Anyone can betray anyone. These words repeated throughout this book left a chill in my bones as I turned the final page. Who can you trust in a world of supernatural elites and lies? The answer rests within the pages and soon left me wanting more.
You are born either a Silver or Red. Altough they don't seem to look different physically, running through their blood is what causes the barrier between them. Reds, who are born with red blood, work in rundown towns and villages, spending most of their lives fighting the war against the Lakelanders. The only way to escape the war is to work. Who they work for? The Silvers, the elites, royals, merchants, aristocrats who govern the nation and force Reds into servitude. Silver blood runs through their veins as a sign of their birthright and key to their abilities. The abilitiy to control the elements, move objects with their mind, bend light to their will, or even enter your mind as a whisper and control your very being.
Mare Barrow is a Red, raised in squalor with three older brothers in the war and a sentence to serve once she turns 18. After trying to save her best friend from being drafted she finds help in the Scarlet Guard. An underground group of Reds who fight for equality. But things don't go as planned and Mare ruins her chances of escaping the war, as well as her sisters and best friends. Perhaps it was luck that Mare ended up at the bar that night, trying to pickpocket the prince and soon finds herself working in the palace. It is there that Mare learns there is more to blood than Silver and Red, and uncovers a power she didn't know existed. Power and lies intertwine and Mare finds herself in a dangerous dance of secrets. Betrayal and lies begin forming a dangerous web. And in a world of Princes, Queens and supernatural elites, Mare learns that anyone can betray anyone.

"Anyone can betray anyone". The post stared at me from my screen with a picture of the book cover behind these words. I had to admit I was intrigued. The comments below the picture made it worse: "The betrayal!". I immediatley researched the book and thousands of comments repeated the same thing: "The betrayal you never saw coming!". I became obsessed with finding this book and reading it. After a late night run to Target I took a quick turn into the book aisle and grabbed the copy of Red Queen. I was hooked. I finished it in less than a day and ran to my computer to write this post. I loved this book! Perhaps it was the familiar story of rags to riches, except, Mare's riches are a lie. Was it the corrupted government that I had read about in many other books? Or the love triangle that kept getting more and more complicated. Many will argue that this book was unoriginal, with a plot that could easily be read about in countless other young adult novels. But I argue that this book was creative and in a way added its own twist to the story. Mare, the main character and narrator, finds herself pretending to be the lost daughter of an elite Silver family. Now betrothed to the youngest prince, Maven, she must learn to fit in while discovering that power is a game. And everyone wants to win. I was in love with this book because I didn't know what was going to happen. Would the Scarlet Guard take over the government? Would they discover Mare is Red instead of Silver? Would someone please kick the crown off of the queen's head! Each character had a motive for power, but not everyone knew what is was until the betrayal. That betrayal! I won't go any further in fear of spoiling what was probably the best plot twist I've read in awhile. My final thoughts on Red Queen: 4.8 out of 5 stars. For anyone who has read The Selection or The Hunger Games, you will enjoy this Game of Thrones and X-men crossover. Find your nearest book store and get yourself a copy of Red Queen.
