The fact that natives of the black planet communicate with each other through scents and the readers get to know what happened through their perspective are both interesting ways to tell the story. It is good that the author describes the spaceship and environment well and that the characters are well developed. The theme to treat others with respect and compassion even if they look and act differently is also well developed through this story.

Thanks for your review. It is interesting that some of the story is told from the vantage point of the native species. I think I would enjoy that aspect too.

This sounds like a fascinating and potentially important book. Human greed causes us (as a species) to destroy our own planet and send species into extinction. Thank you for the insightful review. :tiphat:

The science fiction aspect is way over my head, but having a psychology minor really made me interested in the relationships within the crew. Why did someone like Li even want to go to outer space?

Thank you for the review. It all sounds very interesting. Different situations certainly bring out either the worst or best in people. Respecting our differences is certainly a big part of living peaceably.

When I started reading The Scent of Distant Worlds, by W. D. County, I was pulled into the story right away. It moved rapidly to the Earthlings landing on the planet, encountering the “mushrooms”, and starting their research. Then, it repeated what just happened through the Obsidian natives’ point of view.
It must be very well written to be able to tell the same plot without being repetitive or boring! But, indeed, when they're well developed adding different perspectives can be very enriching.
The author's expertise must play a role in creating a believable narrative, for sure.
Thanks for such an interesting review!

Thanks for the terrific review, I just have to say I enjoyed the experience of reading this book. I must admit it grabbed me from the first page. Having spent time in hospital myself I really connected with the prologue and the making of the totem. I thought sharing this straight away was very heartfelt and to me, showed me a lot about the type of person the author is.

I especially like the undertone about how we treat others and more importantly, ourselves. I do try to be kind to myself, but often find I am my harshest critic. Always good to be reminded, even subtly to tread lightly, even with what we think about ourselves.

I really like the exploratory tone in which it's told, for me both the story and the way it's told is refreshing. It's pure escapism, just like a good movie, time passes differently when you read something you enjoy. I've just started a new post graduate subject (online) looking at literature and the environment, so for me the human greed and destruction of our planet is very topical.

I so want this book. From the very first page I fell in love with the characters. I adore folklore and tribal stuff.

The Scent of Distant Worlds
sounds like it has lessons to teach us and apply to our lives, and could be a good read (even though it's a sci-fi/fantasy novel.) I do enjoy fantasy novels, but not the biggest fan of sci-fi.
:tiphat: Thanks for the great review of the book!

Obsidian is related to diamonds, somewhat like quartz, so, the name of the planet is suggestive. I like Sci-Fi stories and this seems just right down my alley. I would love to read this, given the chance. Thanks for the review.

Addressing the idea of the preservation of a planet's resources and even replacing those resources as well as dealing with man's greed are issues I grapple with daily. Great review!
