I love books that have maps and, bonus, even the layout of buildings where the story take place! The Magician's Secret (Illusions of Power Book 1) by Charles Townsend has maps and building layouts and starts out at a fast pace so the reading sample did not disappoint.
The townspeople turn on Devlin for a mysterious reason and he did not figure it out so I think his ‘fortune-telling’ might be a bit of comedy throughout the story. The only other on-going character(s) mentioned in the reading sample are Greg and Devlin’s landlady so I have yet to meet the others mentioned in the review.
I understand that Devlin is 20 years old, slight and slim with blond hair and he understands that he cannot yet grow a passable beard.

Delvin sounds likes Magician Borlock's apprentice and they were in the middle of a magic trick when he finds himself next to Borlock's unconscious body with a chair leg in his hand! He is obviously not going to kill the one person he looks up to the most. Not until Borlock has shown him everything he knows about magic, at least!!! He is then thrust into a whole other world of magic and adventure and he wonders if it's not just those cheap tricks he has been learning, but this might be some actual, real magic. My mind is split in half, trying to figure this out. I'm getting the book right now. Thank you for an exceptionally, wonderful review!

How does a story about magic become a murder mystery? I guess I'll find out when I read it. Great twist there by the author.

I just love books with magic! I wonder if Delvin was framed or if he really hurt Borlock by himself. And what was the mission he was sent to? Thank you for the review, it piqued my interest. I am looking forward reading this book.

The Magician's Secret by Charles Townsend. I cannot even begin to imagine how Delvin felt after discovering he was set up for the murder of his role model.

The BOTD is full of adventure with a quick start with Delvin uncertain if he had killed his mentor. What happened in the magic lesson that would cause harm to Borlock? The intrigue at the start of the book is definitely appealing. Good review.

Sci-fi/Fantasy is really not my cup of tea, but just two words in description give a sure guarantee that my daughter is going to love the series. Adventure and magic are pretty much all she likes at the moment, but I hope that with series name it will have a bit of political intrigue in addition to crime mystery to hook her to more genres!

While reading this review, I felt some kind of shock at first as I wonder how someone will only come to the awareness of staying beside body not conscious in chains.

I like the elements of suspense and tension in the story, especially as seen in the attack on Borlock. I wonder if Delvin is guilty or not. In addition, I am impressed with the story's fast pace, even as I wish characters like Delvin were given more vivid description to help readers visualize their look and better understand their motivations.
