Sir Ulryc is a warrior who constantly lived without fear. He travels to the mountains to murder the last dragon alive. He then removes the dragon’s eyes, keeps them as medals to prove to the king that the last dragon has been put out of its misery, but the dragon's spirit is still out there. When Sir Ulryc fearlessly faces the spirit, he changes into a far much better man. He therefore takes the dragon's eyes to a rare monastery, begging the monks to keep an eye on the formerly called medals, like a hidden treasure, because the eyes of the dragon have an important purpose in the world.
After the king gets informed about the eyes of the last slain dragon, he sends his army to the monastery, to learn the secret of the initially unknown whereabouts. Following a fight, Tercyn, a young villager, is given the dragon's last remaining eye to secure it from falling into hands of any random enemy. Tercyn escapes together with four monks: Brother Dolry, Brother Hyrhen, Brother Lyst, and Brother Tethyr, through a secret portal just in time to avoid getting caught.
All escapees, with their own misfortunes, seem to have no like among themselves and are having challenges getting along with each other initially: Brother Dolry, always unwell, is complaining too much, Brother Lyst is heartless and cares only about himself, Brother Tethyr, as proud as he is, cannot accept help from anyone, and Brother Hyrhen cannot neglect trying to help other people. Lastly, but not least, Tercyn is still mourning due to the recent loss of his father who was been murdered. They are all on a tour to possibly permanent change of their lives.
However, there are a few things a reader should note: One is, there are too many characters to follow due to many similar names, which is confusing. For example, characters' names such as Adryc, Venryc, Ulryc Odcryc, Helryc, Melyc, Osryc, Tethyr, Tercyn, Azloc, Ardoc, Corloc, and many mire. The other is, women in the book are not really recognized. They are either diabolic, greedy, and narrow minded.
The book's storyline is a smooth flow, from phrases, to sentences, to paragraphs, like easily assembling building blocks one after the other. Any difficult word can be looked up on the Appendices, which covers all mentioned gods, dragons, calendars, monasteries, and languages.
I noted a few word omissions and spelling mistakes. For example, the author wrote "under way," "knew to mindful of this," "They monastery boys were," "had not hidden him my cell," or "the means to free from your prison."
The more I kept reading this book, the more it sucked me in by getting attached to the main characters more than I anticipated. However, I rate DragonGate 3 out of 4 stars for anyone who is a fan of high-fantasy novels, epically adventurous tales and magic, and stories that reveal a deeper meaning.
