I loved the series also. I loved how gritty and real the characters felt, how Aislinn tried to hold on to her humanity and who she used to be. It is an original take on the fae, and I enjoyed reading them.

Latest Review: "Heart of Flint" by Scott Stricklen

I only read the first book, and I may have walked away from it partway through, because I was simply inundated with YA paranormal romance, and it didn't stand out to me as much as a book of another genre might. I'll take another look at it, though, simply for the sake of your review.

I'm not usually one to read a fae book either, but something about Wicked Lovely intrigued me. I love books where the author puts a lot of thought and research into what they're writing, and when I read this that's exactly what I found. It's the little details in the book that really made it exceptional to me, on top of the fascinating approach and slight twist at the end. One thing that I was slightly disappointed by when reading through was the plot though, being flat and not overly exciting. While the characters themselves were fantastic, everything that Ash had to go through was hinged on what seemed to me a rather simple choice. WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD. I loved that Ash didn't end up with Keenan, which I'm sure almost everyone expected at one point or another, it was refreshing to see a female character that didn't end up giving in to a domineering and controlling male (even though he could be sweet). Seth, while being a great character in concept, seemed rather two-dimensional. His role was to love Ash, to accept anything she did or said, and to try and protect her. He was rich, he lived in a place where the fae couldn't get to her, he was willing to stop everything and put himself in danger with no hesitation...while reading about him and liking him, I couldn't help but think "Mary-Sue" whenever he came up. The perfectness made what could have been an amazing character into an interesting albeit rather boring one. The plot itself, on top of being overly simple and ending with "Yes, I'll be the summer queen, which hardly changes anything about my life.", seemed rushed at the end. The fight scenes were quick and gone almost before they ended, characters like Donia gave away extremely secret information they happened to have laying around with little to no prompting. Seth gains the Sight, but it seems to have almost no significance to the story itself, though it would no doubt play a role in any sequels. All in all, I would give the book a 3 out of five for the wonderful background information and disappointingly sub-par plot. This is a book I would recommend only to those with a serious interest in fae mythology.

I really liked this book. I love the fey and this was one of the first series I found that was all fey.
The truth is I can't judge just this one book. I have to take it as a whole.
I love that she isn't afraid to be controversial.
It's nice to see some examples of non-stereotypical relationships in a ya series.

The 'Wicked Lovely' series is one of my favorites.
I agree with previous reviewers that some of the quotes didn't seem to have a real reason to be there, and many of the action scenes were rushed. With that said, I adore faeries and traditional faery folklore.
Melissa Marr's 'Wicked Lovely' series (as well as Holly Black's 'Tithe' series) were the first books about faeries I have ever read that are based on the old stories, instead of today's fanciful legends. I have always loved faeries, but these are the books that made me want to dig deeper into the folklore.
At this time, I am writing a YA urban fantasy about faeries and as I've been doing my own research on faeries, I am realizing just how many hours of research Marr must have put in to her books. I am also starting to be able to tell the things that she took from the folklore and then tweaked to suit her purposes, and most of those decisions were genius.
I was actually a little bummed that Aislinn didn't end up with Keenan, but having read the whole series, I am nonetheless pleased with how everything works out. Although, I do also agree that Seth is a pretty flat character. He's too darn perfect, but then . . . he's perfect. *sigh*
For those of you who have not read the sequels: This is not a typical series where it follows the main character through several different plots. If I remember correctly, the first two books focus on Aislinn, but the rest focus on various other characters in that world. Aislinn and Keenan do make cameos in all of the later books, but their lives are not the point.
I didn't know that when I started reading the series, and I was a little miffed when I realized that I wouldn't get to live in Aislinn's world any more, but the rest of the characters and stories are just as wonderful. If you like the first one, you should like the rest at least as much.

Wicked Lovely was just a book I grabbed at the library. I had never read Melissa Marr before. I never read the description of a book because I like the surprise of not knowing where it will take me and i was not let down. This was my first of many Fae series. I was hooked and I liked that the Fae weren't all adorable and glittery. Because, indeed, the Fae used to be feared by people. I have recommended it to others who like YA books.

I cannot recommend this series, or this author, enough! I love the story she lays out for us to devour, and the pace that she sets for it is perfect. It is a relatively easy read and is stock full of wonderful little details about lore and the fey folk. Beautifully crafted in a way that the fey have never been written before. She takes the lore and runs with it, all the while creating a magical world that is intoxicating and draws you in. I love that she portrays the fey as mischievous, which is exactly how they're portrayed through out history and in all the lore that I've read. Altogether a very well rendered book, and I can't wait to see what comes from her next!

I absolutely love this book series! I've never really read a series that portrayed faeries like this one did. I love the way Melissa Marr describes the fey and the magical and dangerous attributes they posses. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book series, and can say that this series is at the top of my list of favorites.

Just finished this book a couple of days ago. Very good book, could barely put it down, but I don't think I'll be reading the rest in the series.

Like the Original Posters reasons for not reading this series I am incredibly picky about series I read with Fae in them. This was the first series I ever found that had beautifully described and written out how the Fae are. They aren't harmless tinkling little helpers here they're how they have always been before this new persona.

There isn't a person above a reasonable age that I wouldn't recommend Melissa Marr too, she has such a beautiful artistic way of writing.

I think the author was really imaginative and the storyline is quite gripping. The book makes for quite an interesting read for young adults.
