The Mark Hodder stuff is proper high-end imagination.
Scott Westerfield's Leviathan/Behemoth/Goliath series is for older kids, but excellent.
George Mann Leviathan rising & Co. trilogy
Stephen Hunt Jackelian series is excellent
Chris Wooding Ketty Jay material is good seat of the pants action Steampunk

Gail Carriger's books were recently suggested to me so I just ordered the first one in that series. I heard that the author is pretty good about including non-heterosexual characters in the main cast (and not just as the "token" gay), so I am excited about that.
