Im reading Gair Carrigers series at present, though not tried the school one, so this posting peeked my interest :D

Couldn't get on with Gail Carriger..

The Mark Hodder stuff is proper high-end imagination.

Scott Westerfield's Leviathan/Behemoth/Goliath series is for older kids, but excellent.

George Mann Leviathan rising & Co. trilogy

Stephen Hunt Jackelian series is excellent

Chris Wooding Ketty Jay material is good seat of the pants action Steampunk

Gail Carriger's books were recently suggested to me so I just ordered the first one in that series. I heard that the author is pretty good about including non-heterosexual characters in the main cast (and not just as the "token" gay), so I am excited about that. We'll see how it goes!
