I have the exact same thoughts and I agree with the characters and descriptions coming across as flat at times. The world building was nice but wasn't touched deeply in my opinion. Till now I can't get a clear picture of what the world or certain places looked like and how they fully functioned. I didn't really think this was a unique work. The trope with the main character being raised in a rural setting or ranch from the start before leaving for a larger, richer society only to discover that all is not as it seems is honestly an overused premise which was evident in this novel. And the fact that it wasn't done that well kind of dissapointed me here. Good description and world building in certain places isn't enough to cover gaping plot holes and weaknesses in the story

Hmm... I saw a slightly different take on this same book but I can notice the similarities. I might have to read it myself to see, I guess. But I can't say I'll hold high hopes for it. Really appreciate this review too though.
