Thanks for responding!Leon Durham wrote:Good analytic piece of work! Kemen sounds like a character I would love to meet. You said that there's no romance, and maybe Kemen's view of himself as being ugly has something to do with it, but I can't help but wonder if somewhere near the end of the novel, there's any growth or end to how Kemen views himself.
Kemen's story will continue in the next two novels in this series-- I suspect he will continue be a dynamic character, and I think that he wouldn't be the type to brood forever about the way he looks. The people he encounters tend to find him to be very intimidating, and since he is a nomad, it is rare for anyone to have the opportunity to get to know him better. Based on the end of the first novel, I think he may find himself thrown in the same company repeatedly in the future.
Some might have found some of the information to be superfluous, but I never felt like I was reading an academic text or instruction manual. I am of the "pro-detail" party, so I appreciate minute details in the novels I read. They help me to get into the characters' heads.Leon Durham wrote:I love epic war stories, and if this is one than it has already won me over with one point. I wonder how the author integrates her training into this novel. But I hope she doesn't use too much of her knowledge; fiction can be ruined when it comes across as a manual.

Thank you! I hope you enjoy the book. I've started using the Bookshelves "want to read" shelf for all of the great stuff I've been reading about in reviews. That's been helpful for me.LivreAmour217 wrote:This is a great review, and it sounds like an amazing book! I am going to add it to my summer reading list!

And I love that the book explores the problems that arise when someone's appearance doesn't match their inside very well. A very common problem.

I think the amount of detail an author puts into each individual scene depends on the pace of the whole book. If it's fast paced, as in short chapters, or long chapters with a lot of scenes, then the detailing needs to be kept as short as possible.
