Yes - we know we're probably not alone and hope for that alien contact, but there's every chance they'd be hostile, like the murderous gorgons in this book. It's interesting that I've recently finished other books where the cliffhanger ending suggests a sequel is coming, which is great unless the sequel never arrives.
