I actually grew up with this series. I had The Sorcerer's Stone read to me in class by my 4th grade teacher and I followed the books and the movies until the final film came out when I was 22. I've reread the series a couple of times and every time I read the series I discover something I hadn't seen before. I have to say that the series took a deeper and more in depth turn with the premiere of Book Six, The Half-Blood Prince. In this one the reader starts to see the true and deeper nature of quite a few of the characters.

My favorite character is Narcissa Malfoy, whose final treachery to Voldemort rivals even Snape's in its potency and wrath. Cornered and unarmed she manages to put the gun (or the wand I should say) in the hand of the person who can kill the Dark Lord. Add to that the complete lack of obedience to Voldemort she showed in book six by seeking Snape's aid to protect her son from Voldemort's psychopathic mind games.

One of the best things about Rowling's characters is that they are realistic in nature; all have good and bad, strengths and weaknesses, which make it possible and even easy for the readers to associate with the characters. Almost everyone can say they've met someone like Harry, or Dumbledore or (Heaven forbid) even Voldemort if unlucky enough. I think the reason this series is so popular is because it doesn't just tell the story of a young wizard living out his destiny, it tells the story of our own lives in one way or another.

I started reading them when I was in elementary school because my mom would read a chapter every night to us and she wasn't going fast enough to satisfy my hunger for more. Loved the series then and love it now.

As my kids were growing up, they really got into the Harry Potter series. Then when the movies came out they wanted to see them as well. I remember watching the first one with them, and realized that I enjoyed it as well. I personally enjoy fantasy and sci-fi books. I look forward to reading more of these types of books.

I also grew up with the books, before they became super famous. I love the development of both the plot and the characters, and how Rowling manages to evoke sympathy for even the most evil characters. Even Voldemort is more than just a one-dimensional villain. Towards the end of the series I felt myself empathising with Draco Malfoy in particular.

I was a real Harry Potter nerd at one stage, and I still reread the books regularly, although I am not nearly as obsessed (sigh, growing up sucks sometimes). When The Deathly Hallows was released we held a dress-up party complete with Harry Potter snacks. I went as Professor Trelawney and my sister was a Death Eater :) When my other sister, who is ten years younger than me, started getting into the books she insisted that we all call her Ginny Weasley, and signed it on all her school books... And yes, we all waited for that letter on our eleventh birthday!

Even though these books are aimed at younger readers, there are so many universal themes. Good vs. evil, the power of love and friendship, choices vs. fate, etc. I also found the political angle quite fascinating, and the idea of how something akin to Nazism could grow incrementally. These books are so well planned, and I believe that they will remain classics for years to come.

As for the movies, I am pleased to say that despite the omission of several subplots I thoroughly enjoyed them, and they were much better than I expected.

Fellow Potterheads, hello ;D
Absolutely love the HP series. All the Weasley family members were my favorite characters, along with others of course.

But all the deaths, urgh. So upsetting.

So I just started the Harry Potter series, and I absolutely love it. So far I've only read the first three books and I'm currently reading the fourth book (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and so far I'm really satisfied. I honestly don't know why I watch all the movies before I actually read the book because I kind of already know what happens and how all the books end. But the books has so much more detail and is better than the movie that I still get kind of surprised of what happens. I think that anyone who loves to read or anyone who loves Sci-fy/Fantasy books will love to read the Harry Potter series. :D

I love Harry Potter as well! I have read all other the books and watched all of the movies! I enjoyed the the way the story was told and how it progressed. J.K. Rowling is honestly one of my favorite authors. If someone gives me a book like Harry Potter, I will read it in a heartbeat! No doubt about that!

Best series ever. I have no clue how someone could think up all those things but I'm glad she did. It's brilliant.

I was slow getting on the Harry Potter train, or should I say the Hogwarts Express? I didn't really have an interest in reading the books, and every time any one of the movies came on TV I changed the channel because I just wasn't interested. Finally a few years ago my friends talked me into watching the movies and I fell in love with the wizard world. I started reading the books and finished all of the books before I even finished watching all of the movies. I love the setting and the magic and the suspense and the twists. I could read all of them over and over again. I just love being drawn into that magical world.

There is a proud side of my personality that refuses to let myself read books that are hyped up due to Hollywood. When Harry Potter was just getting it's start with the first movie, I gave the first book a try. Once the rest of the films were released, I was unable to make it past the Half-Blood Prince book. My image of the books were already distorted by what I had seen at the theaters. Maybe later in my life, I'll give the books another try.

Truly the greatest series of my youth. I am incredibly glad that I was 11 when the books came out...I got the opportunity to grow up with them.
