I agree with you. I agree that the rapid pace in the first chapter creates immediate intrigue, prompting a seamless transition to the next. Princess Jarla's strong and fearless character is a standout in the story. Her defiance of societal norms adds a compelling layer to the narrative.

I think this book will be a great read. The magic, the attempted murder, the plot twist,... I think it makes for a great story. But I agree that the book could be more descriptive. I like some guidelines when trying to imagine the characters form the story.

Thank you for your detailed review.
It's peculiar that the characters have minimum description, perhaps Townsend intended for the readers to use the magic of their imagination. The rest of the book sounds pretty detailed and well calculated, to the extent of detailing each place, despite there being a variety of settings for the unfolding plot.
The plot sounds very intriguing. Princess Jarla sounds outstanding.

After reading the review of "The Magician's Secret" by Charles Townsend, I have to read the book to find out what the secret is, and Delvin’s world of adventure and magic. This seems to be a fast moving story to be enjoyed.

I had previously reviewed this book and found I really enjoyed it. The fantasy world of magic and strange lands and customs are all appealing and I really hope to be able to read the following books in the trilogy. I enjoyed the flow of the writing and the followed the story effortlessly. I did dislike the class divide that was depicted, although the other wrote this so well. The cover is also appealing and drew me in.

Thanks for the great review. I'm wondering what happened between Devin being found with his friend's unconscious body to his adventure of magic with princess Jarla and Fionella; your review adds intrigue to the story. It does look like a great story though.

The story started suddenly, before it calmed down and that made me hooked from the very start. A great job on the book and I always loved magic and I always loved murder mysteries. Combine the two and I am happy :) . Congratulations for the BOTD and best wishes for future projects.

Great review! Considering how long it took for this book to actually see the light of day (based on what the author said in the intro) it’s nice to see that it’s as well-written as it is.
As I started reading the first chapter, I immediately felt compelled to read more.
I actually started reading the sample without looking at the synopsis this time, and was totally caught off guard with the kick-off being an accusation of murder! Based on the title alone, I guessed this being a mystery of some sort, but not necessarily a full-on thriller LOL.
The only dislike I have about the story is that I wish Townsend had described the characters’ appearance more. Taking Delvin as an example, I don’t know what he looks like or if he’s tall or short. I don’t even know how old Delvin and the other characters are. This is a very simple thing, but it makes a huge impact. I was left struggling to picture what Delvin, the protagonist, looked like.
I absolutely understand this, but I’ll admit I’ve found the discourse around this topic very interesting. It’s natural to want to know/see how the author imagines their characters looking, as they’re the ones who created them. Yet, I’ve also seen it noted that having little to no appearance details can plausibly add to the readers’ experience, giving them the opportunity to imagine the characters as they personally see them. I guess it ultimately comes down to what authors go for with individual titles and how readers choose to receive them.

The review was excellent! I'm excited to find out if Delvin actually took down his mentor. Princess Jarla's bold character adds an intriguing element to the story. Looks like a captivating read.

I thought this review was fantastic; the author covered all the important topics and it was really nicely written. Really fascinating plot. To find out what unfolded in the end, I desire to read this book. The book's sample is incredibly enticing and welcoming. Congratulations on BOTD, author.

I love being thrown into the action right from the beginning. Before you know it, the story is over and you've been taken on a fun adventure. I also love a good mystery. "The Magician's Secret" sounds like a fun weekend read.

The first paragraph of your review immediately grabbed my attention.

The storyline appears quite intriguing. I'm particularly drawn to the character of Jarla, the confident woman who challenges societal norms by confidently standing up and speaking out against men.

Delvin's journey from a magic enthusiast to a suspect in Borlock's mysterious incident intrigues me. The fast-paced opening chapter's unanswered questions have pushed me to dive deeper into 'The Magician's Secret.'
