Re: The Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins (Discussion)

I just finished reading the series last month and really enjoyed it. Loved the first two and then the third one was just too much for me. It was incredibly dull in some places and I just didn't like Katniss anymore. I get that she had gone through a lot of trauma, but I felt like she lost her spunk. I felt like she was beaten and let herself get beaten when the Katniss from books 1 and 2 wouldn't have let herself get to the state she's in by the end. Did I cry? Lot gonna lie: I did cry probably the last ten pages of the books. Crying didn't make me like book 3 though. What I did like about the series overall was the messages of war and our obsession with celebrity and reality TV. Just really refreshing to read a YA book with deep themes and real world issues. It certainly left me thinking long after I read the series.

I honestly was not a fan of the hunger games, characters were lacking in anything resembling dynamic personality.

Hi, I'm new to the site, and i'll introduce myself - i'm kinda addicted to ya novels... especially those about paranormal things (with the exclusion of vampires... cuz seriously we have to many of those). More to the point my favorite Hunger games books is the last one - Mockingjay. I loved it because it was very realistic, the ending was very real, hell everything that happened in the book was real. The sacrifices each character had to make... What I didn't like was the use of weird mutant monsters... That was really strange and off but it was a distopia of sorts, so things were a little weird. *spoiler* What did upset me was the fact that Kat's sister died. She was a very positive character and completely selfless.

I, too, was absorbed in the HG series, though my least favorite part was 1.5-2.5 (halfway through 2 to halfway through 3, if you get what I mean). I was talking to my husband about how old our children would be before we let them read something like this series (our oldest is 18 months). 12? 13? 10, if our kid seemed mature? But as an adult reader, I did enjoy the series.

I would have to say that of the three books in the series, Catching Fire was my favorite. It allowed Peeta to grow as a character, he no longer seemed like the defenseless boy in love with Katniss. It was unpredictable, fast faced, and realistic.

I thought the overall plot was good, yet depressing I am going to start reading these books again though.

The Hunger Games is definitely one of my favorite series after Harry Potter (it holds the #1 spot). I personally believe Suzanne Collins is brilliant and she did a fantastic job with each of the characters and the story itself, I would've liked a different ending for the series as I'm sure a lot of people do as well. Nevertheless, the series is fantastic and I plan on reading it many times over, I'm currently on my 5th time.

I love the series. The first book was captivating. The 2nd book was like a balance to the characters and the story. The 3rd one however is a bit disappointing. Somehow I think Collins write that book just for the purpose of ending the series. The story lacks conflicts and the first few chapters was a drag. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading them, especially the parts about Cinna.

I absolutely love this series! The whole concept is just original and captivating. The first book had me gripped from the outset where the characters were engaging and the plot was a nice mix of adventure and drama with a darker edge. The outcome wasn't predictable so I could barely put the book down. Catching Fire was an improvement of the first book where once again the storyline was original and the development of the characters made me love them even more (especially Peeta and Haymitch). I do agree with the rest of the commenters that Mockingjay is not as good as the other 2. The plot is a little undeveloped and dry and Katniss is at times irritating. However all-in-all the series is a extremely enjoyable, easy read where I honestly can not rest, even after reading them several times, until I finish all 3 books.

P.S I absolutely love Peeta - I want my own boy with the bread <3

Only tangentially relevant to the topic but just in the event anyone on the planet has not seen this ...

... example of both a class act and a classy actress - Jennifer Lawrence at the premier of The Hunger Games - Catching Fire.

My current understanding is that the girl has a life-limiting illness and this was her "wish" to the Make A Wish Foundation. Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) stepped off the hallowed red carpet as the actors entered the theatre in London for the premier to spend time with her and make her wish come true.

WAY TO GO JEN !!!!! Other actors could take a lesson from you.

Hey y'all! I usually do not like these type of books but I have to say after I started book one I was hooked! Loved the series and now find myself liking the dystopian type books!

Everyone likes it here? Wow.
I've never said this before but I honestly think the movie (soon to be movies) is better than the books.

Her ideas are good and some of her description is all right but some of her plot choices didn't make sense. Kat ends up with a crazy kid who's tried to kill her? Yes, because that makes sense. Especially when she's been close to the other guy her whole life. I also don't think enough character development was put in between her being a symbol of rebellion and her hating her symbolism.

The whole thing could have been done a lot better.
Sure, the author has some great ideas but I think she needed a harsher editor. Will be interesting to see what else she comes out with story wise.

I strongly dislike reading books we are told to read. But i was somehow convinced to read this series. Although i have yet to finish the third installment, all i can say is i liked them. I read the first and second of the series in a little over three days. And although i find the story line kind of bleh, I appreciate suzanne collins writing style. I didn't quite get engulfed in these books as so many of my peers did, i did however appreciate the authors talent. Will eventually finish the third.
