ESCAPE by Mark Kingston Levin is a fiction book that begins with a climax of the story. It is a second edition published in 2018. I must admit that the first page made my head go round and round as I could not decipher what the author was talking about due to the vocabularies used. However, I let this slide after reading the author’s biography that stated that the ‘’ trilogy was inspired by new science created by the author in the field of cosmology known as dark energy’’
I developed a soft spot for captain Jennifer who acts as the heroine in the book as she strove to restore to normalcy the natural way of life. The theme of love is evident in the novel as the point of view of bisexuality is brought out. Other themes like friendship, betrayal, humanity, leadership, optimism, fear, guilt, determination among many more are firmly but delicately brought out in the book. Dr. Levin uses science jargon to educate, inform and above all entertain his readers. He also has an authoritative grasp of the location and setting of his novel.
A battle between the Secret society who are in a mission to save naturals from extinction and the Syndos who believe that naturals are ‘’inferior trash’’ and need to be eliminated. The Secret society are to use the Trans – Time one to travel back to the twenty seventh century to correct a genetic error present in the first Syndos to prevent their aggressive behaviors against humanity. The book reminds readers on the power behind team work. We encounter the strength of Kylie who is Jennifer’s deputy and the valor of Jennifer – captain of the secret society team. Kylie is sharp as she has mastered the holographic command interface and illustrates it to the rest of the team members. ‘’…. And this world had given her nothing but scars. The past was to be her redemption, not just to save the future of humanity but perhaps to save her psyche as well’’ was a quote I found intellectually stimulating from the text.
I also liked that Dr. Levin uses diagrams to illustrate his story, it gives the reader a snippet of what he is talking about. The book was fast paced and the story line flowed smoothly until the last page – no overlapping scenes to complain about. I however got mixed up on whether Jennifer was a man or woman for example in page 8 Jennifer is referred to as ‘’her’’ yet in the same page Kylie calls Jennifer ‘’sir’’.
I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars because the book has been thoroughly edited. I enjoyed the read and would highly recommend the book to anyone who loves sci-fi. I am definitely looking forward to reading other works from Dr. Levin.
