The Sparrow by Denna M Davies is a young adult fantasy and the first book in the Emaji Nation series.

Imagine opening a door in your grandparents’ basement and suddenly finding yourself alone in a different world. And then being told about a prophecy that you will not only marry a guy predestined for you but also are “The Sparrow” who saves that whole planet from an evil ruler! 16-year-old Amanda is at her grandparents’ house to relax during the summer vacation but instead has a tough decision to make. Will she be able to accept her destiny? If she does accept, will she succeed in her quest?

The author has an excellent eye for detail which can is evident in the way she built Emaji’s every minute detail like the different groups of people, each with their unique coloring and clothing. Also, it was helpful that the author provided a glossary given that a lot of unknown words were used to refer things in Emaji. Some of the dialogues in the book were very insightful and deep. Like when Shia told Amanda,
“Amanda, you will always fight. Perhaps, not on the level you would with Zorn, but there’s always something to stand for, whether that’s on Earth or here on Emaji.”
Something about this statement was very real and showed how much effort the author put in developing each character.

However, there were a few details the author overlooked. For instance, when Amanda went through a door in her grandparents’ basement, she immediately seemed to know that it was a portal to another world without any hesitation. That was a stretch for a teenage girl with no prior knowledge of her grandparents’ secret.

This book was well edited, and I found no errors.

In Conclusion, I loved the book and would recommend to every lover of the young adult fantasy genre. The book has it all- exceptionally well-built characters, a magical world that leaves the reader with nostalgia at the end and a story of a young girl who has big decisions to make and the fate of an entire planet on her shoulders. The author’s writing is commendable and makes every reader empathize with Amanda and eagerly look forward to the next books in the series to follow her journey to gain the power to defeat Zorn. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars for an incredible work of fiction I read in a long time.
