The Sparrow by Denna M. Davis takes you on a journey where a young woman finds out she has a destiny unlike anything she could possibly imagine. Amanda just finished her tumultuous Junior year and was begrudgingly sent to her Aunt and Uncles house for the summer. Just as she accepts the fact that her summer will be boring and uneventful, her Aunt Rose reveals an unbelievable secret to her. Amanda is to travel to Emaji, for her nesia shel taglily, The Journey of Discovery, a rite of passage that all 16-year old’s must go through to determine their place in society. Amanda is sent into Emaji alone and comes upon Solomon, a beautiful, and handsome young man with wings who takes her on a journey through the Hanovi Forrest to the square of Mehita. She finds her Aunt has been waiting for her all along, and Amanda is taken to meet the Diyen, the leaders of the Egud, who will prepare her for her Journey. She questions the fate everyone seems to believe is hers but takes the challenge and begins her tours.
I liked that The Sparrow is an incredibly vibrant and descriptively written book. It was impossible to put this book down, and each chapter left me wanting more. You will lose yourself in the creativeness of this book. As Amanda begins her tours required before going on the Journey of Discovery, she faces many trials, physically, mentally and spiritually. She comes close to death, but she is a witty and strong young woman. The travel back and forth from Emaji to Earth is interesting and Amanda must keep everything sorted between the two worlds. It is challenging especially with the drastic difference in the hours of the day in each world. It is a pleasure to follow her through all the emotional ups and downs and see her discover many things she didn’t realize about herself. The love story is sweet and beautiful, and Solomon is a true hero for Amanda throughout the book.
I also liked the relatability, and emotion shown through these characters. Each character in this book faces trials and emotions like a typical teenager today. You understand the love Solomon instantly feels for Amanda, the resistance Amanda has in accepting that she may be the person that her Aunt and the people of Emaji think she is, and the jealousy of Leah, who believes she is the one for Solomon. The only difficult part in reading this book is having to work though the unique names but there is a very helpful glossary at the end of this book.
This is a book geared more toward tweens and teens but is also enjoyable for adults who like to escape in a book full of beautifully written fantastical characters and an exciting and fulfilling story. Readers who do not like fantasy may not enjoy this book. It is a colorful, detailed and vivid book that will keep you hooked.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was interesting thorough the entire book, with no lulls in action, emotion and excellent storytelling. It was an exceptionally well edited book, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in her series, The Harrow coming soon.
