The Sparrow is written by Denna M. Davis. This is book one of the Emaji Nation series. The story starts with a regular teenage girl called Amanda. During a visit to her grandmother's home, she finds herself in a new world called Emaji. In this fantastic new place, she learns that she might hold a special place in a prophecy that can save this world. If this prophecy is true, she will have to face a horrifying evil called Zorn. Before all else, she must complete a rite of passage known as the Journey. This is to gain her true powers from Ema. Her destiny is also intertwined with a young male Emajian called Solomon. In Emaji, the inhabitants possess extraordinary gifts linked to the elements of land, water, air and fire.
I enjoyed reading this book. Almost immediately, the intrigue and mystery started to build. By page three, Amanda was introduced to the idea of "Ha'Ankor." However, I found the momentum of the story was slower at the beginning. These were mainly at the parts where Amanda was learning about Emaji. Ever so often, I did have to slow my pace of reading to properly understand the names of the different groups of the Emajians and the different details about this place. Although the buildup of the story was slow, the storyline was strong and developed consistently.
The setting was exotic and unusual. It complemented the variety and uniqueness of the characters in the story. The characters were relatable, interesting and brave. Amanda was a young girl who suddenly found that a tremendous responsibility had been placed upon her shoulders. She had to show incredible courage. One of the main themes throughout the story was good versus evil. There was also love, hate, courage and betrayal. As the story moved forward, the action started to grow in momentum. The glossary at the end was a nice addition since there were many unusual terms.
Overall, this was a great book and I did not find anything to lessen the quality of the story. I found it extremely imaginative and enjoyable and it held my attention until the very end. It seemed professionally edited since I found very few errors. I gave this book an overall rating of 4 out of 4. I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy fantasy stories with magic and adventure. Adults who also enjoy this genre will find this book a great read. I would not recommend this for readers who do not like fantasy books.
