Fish Wielder by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel. It tells the story of the adventures of its main character, Thoral Mighty Fist, a famed and constantly-drunk warrior, as he ventures through the magical world of Grome. With him is always his trusty side-kick Brad the talking (and walking) fish. The pair set out on a series of bold quests, and discover that perhaps Grome isn’t as peaceful and perfect as it seemed, with evildoers out to eat the great Pudding of Power and wear the Bracelet of Evil.

Readers will be both engaged and enthralled by the hilarious and sometimes slightly ludicrous misadventures of the book’s silly characters. In the beginning, it is completely light-hearted and without much of an important-seeming plot, with gluten-intolerant elves and weird-looking innkeepers. But once things get going, there are twists and turns to the story that will no doubt have you on your toes.

Hardison gives everything a fantasy novel needs, teasing the clichés a reader may find in all of its kind. There are undeniable parallels between Fish Wielder and books like The Lord of the Rings. To one who hasn’t read such books, (or even seen the movies) these may slip right past, but to someone in-the-know, there are funny little hints all throughout the novel. The book’s attention to detail for the sake of humor is constantly there to remind the reader of the wit of its author.

The comical banter between characters throughout the whole book is by far what I liked most. Without detracting from the story one bit, it kept me laughing and wanting more the entire time. I often find that my favorite parts of a book are the funniest ones, and with this book, there are so many of those to love! At times, there are parts that might seem a little heavy, but the comical intervention keeps everything moving along nicely, without damaging the moment. The only issue I had with this book is that many details of the main character were hinted, and all throughout the book, the reader knows they don’t have all the information and that it is important to the story, yet it is somewhat-annoyingly concealed. I have no issue with an unexplained main character, but after a while, it seemed like the mystery was being dragged out too much. And yet, eventually Hardison lets us in on everything, and we grow to love Thoral that much more. In the end, if you stick around, you will be glad you did.

The book is written remarkably, and I caught no spelling/grammar mistakes or errors. It was a very superb book, which I rate 4 out of 4 stars. Anyone who likes the fantasy genre or anyone who appreciates humor and sometimes-preposterous characters should read this book. All ages can join Thoral and Brad on their quest, but occasionally they slip into Old English which could be difficult for young readers to understand. Happy reading!
