Containment Breach by WM. A. Yandell was a refreshing Sci-Fi/Fantasy read. I enthusiastically rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The intrepid scientist and his team must work together to save the world from a lab grown life form created by another scientist and taken into space for containment and experimentation. Government and Private services compete to control the outcome and determine the best plan of action to save our planet from possible annihilation.
At times the descriptions were a little over done. This made it a bit difficult to follow from the beginning of the story through to the main action just before the halfway point the book. However this is my only issue with the stories flow. The author has taken several different types of well proven science fiction themes and turned them into something new. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this dark but fast moving story from beginning to end.
The protagonist being an educated scientist with a conscience and sensitive nature was very easy to root for. The way he interacted with fellow scientists and official government personnel was both believable and what I would want my hero to be like if the fate of the world were hanging in the balance. It was no problem for my mind to get involved with the main characters motivations and behavior.
Bad guys abound in this story. Both human and created life forms. The fact that the "monsters" are of tiny stature is actually a refreshing change from the regular "giant" creature villains. The scientific legitimacy of the creature's origin and existence seems well thought out and actually somewhat believable. I more than once found myself looking around at night after I put the book down, wondering what small creatures I may have to be on the lookout for.
As a novel I found this entire adventure to be quite refreshing. Not the same old story that is often told time and time again. In this book the author did not use the standard chapter system and instead used dotted text breaks. I personally found that this was not an issue, and it had no effect on my enjoyment of the plot. The characters both good and bad displayed tremendous levels of dedication and service that you don't read about much in a fictional story. There are both selfish and selfless sacrifices that occur during this story that both impressed and inspired me. This is definitely not the "norm" in most stories today.
The best part about Containment Breach to me? The story continued to pick up steam and build tension gradually and consistently from beginning to the very end. From the work done by our main characters on earth, through the monumental effort of every person in the story in outer space, I was hooked. Plot twists alone make this a great read. The climax of the story was actually near the conclusion and that, is what keeps me reading until "the end"
