We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the series. Virko is the hub city of the kingdom of Voulhire. Just like the previous book, there is a helpful map so that the reader can geographically picture Virko’s location. This book elaborates more on the history of Virko and why it is so prosperous. The new lord of this city inherits quite a political advantage. He becomes almost more powerful than the King! Read it to find out!

This book is just as filled with magic as the last. There are new types of magic as well, which is very exciting! Gaslighting plays upon the things someone doesn’t know as a trick. There is a church that has a Carnem Relay, which is a device that detects any spell cast within a thousand miles! I enjoy that Tysz decided to introduce new forms of magic because each one is equally enthralling. Even though there are new concepts, the previous ones are still used, which keeps the story solid.

My favorite part is Galen Bray’s evolution. Galen is one of the only main characters that carried over to this installment. He comes from the dangerous Land of Princes, out of Voulhire’s reach, where all he knew how to do was survive. When he first reached Voulhire he was unfamiliar with people-watching. But now that he is no longer fighting for his life, he has the time to read others and process social situations. The best thing is: he casts a spell successfully for the first time!

I believe the book was professionally edited because I only found two errors which were simple typos. The only thing that was not pleasing about the book was the formatting. The text flow alternates between one line break and two line breaks. Sometimes there are paragraphs separated by spaces. Other times the text is continuous. Despite this, my rating is 4 out of 4 stars. Everything else is well done and engaging.

I recommend this book to fantasy lovers all over! There is plenty of adventure, action, and politics. There are also many wise quotes within the text because the diction is so eloquent. It is very inspiring to read as well, because the tale is very philanthropic. It is worth reading this book and continuing the We Are Voulhire series. As stated before, beware that you must read the first book before this one. We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first title to read if you want to read about Virko.

I have read and reviewed this book. I hadn’t paid attention to the magic so minutely before reading your review. I feel enlightened. Thanks for the review!
