The Sparrow by Denna M. Davis is a fun, fantasy adventure. This is book number one in the series. This creative story takes the reader to another world, full of new discoveries. It is one you will not forget.

Amanda Stephenson seems like a normal high school girl from Earth. Rose, Amanda’s grandma, knows this is not true and has waited many years to deliver a message to her granddaughter. Rose gives Amanda a letter and a key to a portal of the Emaji Nation. Amanda learns that she is the Sparrow and part of a prophecy. Amanda faces major adjustments. She must learn about this new and complex world. She must also deal with her physical changes. Her skin color changes to crimson with gold stripes and she grows wings. She must learn to fight to defeat an evil man named Zorn. But with so many people wanting to see the Sparrow dead, will Amanda survive?

This story is full of imagination. Emaji is a complicated world. At times, I thought it was too complex. There is a glossary in the back of the book that is helpful in keeping all the information straight. Overall, the story is well thought out and full of beautiful descriptions of Emaji. The land is full of new creatures like the mobiat, which looks like a rhinoceros and polar bear with a fluffy tale. Emaji is a wild landscape ranging from dangerous forests to dark caves. There are various groups of people that possess different types of magic. For example, some have the ability to manipulate fire or water to their own advantage.

The love story between Amanda and Solomon is my favorite part of the story. The first time they meet Amanda fears for her life. She later learns that Solomon is prophesied to be her husband. She struggles with this idea. Solomon shows how much he cares for Amanda. He is by her side protecting her from the ones that want to end her life. Their relationship adds sweetness to the story.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This story contains violence, so it would be best for mature teens and adults. This story might not for readers who dislike fantasy or fiction. Amanda is a strong female character and proves to be inspirational as she steps into her unexpected role. This story continues in book number two, The Harrow. It would be interesting to see this series on the big screen.

I am a huge fan of fantasy novels, and really enjoy reading the ones that kind of span young adult into the adult genre. This book sounds like it would be very much something I would enjoy. Thanks to your review, I am adding it to my "want to read" list.
