We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is a science fiction/fantasy novel written by Matthew Tysz. It is the second book in the We are Voulhire series. Virko is a city in Voulhire whose main focus is industry and not religion. The people of Virko want every member of the clergy to leave the city. This is bad news for Demetrius because he is a monk originally from Virko. Demetrius, Galen, and Rowan are going to Virko to ask Lord Venden for iron for Galen to use in his blacksmithing shop. Lord Eldus was supposed to send them iron, but he was killed by the Riva Rohavi along with half of the people of Hillport.
When Demetrius, Galen, and Rowan get to Virko, they find out that Lord Venden is very ill. However, they are still able to speak with him. He says that he will write in his will to send iron to Galen, and he asks Demetrius a favor before he passes away. Demetrius is determined to fulfill this wish. Demetrius can feel a darkness in Lord Venden's house, and when he tries to fix it, he unleashes an incredible terror onto the streets of Virko.
I enjoyed how the book was written from several different points of view. Every chapter the narrator switched between Folcro, the Eiodi, Galen, and a few others. The Eiodi is the head of the church. He lives in the holy city of Yamon Soul. The different points of view made me want to keep reading because I wanted to find out what the connection between these characters would be.
I thought it was nice that the author kept some of the main characters from the first book, while also introducing new characters. I was glad that the story continued for some characters that I had come to like, such as Galen, who is a kind and loyal friend. It was a good idea to introduce new characters as well because it kept the story interesting. The author does a very good job of describing the new main characters; therefore it is not necessary to read the first book before this one. The only criticism I have is that there were so many characters that it is easy to forget who someone is if they are not a main character.
I give We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz 4 out of 4 stars because I really enjoyed the plotline and the characters. The book was very well edited as I only noticed one spelling error. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy books. The book does contain some mature language, so I would say that it's not for readers under the age of 16.
