"Last And First Men" by Olaf Stapledon, anyone?

Post by RobP »

Hi there. I'm not a big sci-fi reader, yet "Last And First Men" by Olaf Stapledon left an indelible impression on me on a very deep level. Has anyone felt changed after reading it, and began viewing things differently? I'm referring in particular at our place as humans and the age we live in within a greater picture, one in which the greatest civilization we could possibly create falls into insignificance when inserted into a scope spanning 250 million years of evolution/demise cycles of human presence in the world? Religion and worship in particular seem to quickly lose all value and credibility when faced with the smallness of human history seen in the perspective offered by Stapledon, and all such fragile aspect of our brief visit upon this planet/universe are suddenly rendered utterly trivial..
Has anyone had the same experience with "Last And First Men"?
