Matthew Tysz has once again created an enthralling adventure in his second installment in this series, We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko. The majority of this second book takes place in the evolving city of Virko. Under the care and nurture of Lord Venden who had pioneered Virko the city rapidly flourished to become a major power of industry in Voulhire. However, Lord Venden has become ill and his only son Hans, also known as Folco, has diabolical plans for the future of Virko. With the city evolving the leaders of Virko want to push for a new type of government. The waning health of the sovereign provides the opportune moment for this to come to pass. In this time of change, the government is bordering the end of monarchy rule and is transitioning into that of a democracy. This would ultimately remove Folco from his throne before has had a chance to warm the seat. This of course is all part of Folco’s plan as he secretly controls the demon living in the depths of his father’s estate known as Rendenhide.

We swing back to Galen Bray and his companions, Rowan his executor turned best friend and Demitrius the monk/imbuer they had hired from the holy city of Yamon Soul to investigate the strange material they had brought back from their last adventure. Their journey takes them to Virko, in an attempt to free up the Iron market to help the economy in Magnum Caelum. Having inherited his uncle’s blacksmith shop Galen is grateful for his community and wishes to see it prosper. In Virko, Galen and his comrades meet with Kayden Morgan, one of Demitrius’ old classmates, to discuss the possibility of getting the iron trade brought to Magnum Caelum. During this meeting they learn of Lord Venden’s illness and insist on speaking to him. Lord Venden learns of Demitrius’ powers as an imbuer and requests that Rendenhide be cleansed of the ominous spirit that has been haunting the estate. It is during this task that the three companions come face to face with the demon that is being contained in the underbelly of Rendenhide. With a narrow escape they regroup and plan how to remove the beast to honor Lord Venden’s last wish. It is during the second attempt to abolish the demon that something goes terribly wrong and the entire city of Virko faces slaughter by the hoard of demons that have lain dormant under Rendenhide.

I really enjoyed getting to know the characters more in depth in this second book. The author has a way of introducing new people with unique stories and fascinating personalities that captivate the reader. Matthew is talented in the way he gets the reader to care about, or in Hans’ case, to despise his characters. So much so that the reader is riveted and has to continue reading to see where they adventure takes the cast that has ultimately captured our interest. The only thing that I disliked about the book was some of the more grotesque scenes. One of the more eerie scenes was the one that involved Kayden’s wife and unborn child. It is because of this scene and several others included in the slaughter of the city that I would not recommend this book for younger readers. The carnage, as well as, some sexual references and vulgar language would suggest a more mature audience such as young adults or older.

It was easy to rate this book with a solid 4 out of 4 stars. The storyline flowed well and contained memorable characters and a well structured layout of Voulhire. There were no typos or flaws in the book worth mentioning and it is pain to see that this book was professionally edited.

Overall, I would recommend this book as a good read for a mature audience. The Author has spared no effort in developing his characters and ultimately this series. There are many unique attributes in this book that contribute to making this book a success. Some of these attributes include a sense of the magical realm, politics, religion, family, friends, adventure, mystery, action, to name a few. I am inspired to read the next installment in this series to see where the story takes the people of Voulhire from here.
