We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko; is the second installment in the We are Voulhire series authored by Mathew Tysz. The mayor of Magnum Caelum seeks Galen's help to boost trade in the small town. This requires Galen and his companions; Rowan and Demetrius to make a trip to Virko in search of iron. Virko is Demetrius' hometown and the industrial heart of Voulhire. Upon arrival, Demetrius introduces them to Kayden; an old friend of his and a friend to the Lord of Virko. Kayden sends them to the Lord( a gravely ill man) in his name, and their request is granted. But in return, the Lord wants a favor of his own.

Unfortunately, this installment doesn't standalone. You will have to read the first book to comprehend this one. Save for a few characters, most of the characters in this installment have been introduced in the previous one. That's to say, almost all the information in the book will fly right over your head if you haven't read the first novel.

That being said, they were a couple of loose ends I was hoping this installment would tie-up, sadly, this is not the case. In the first book, Lord Eldus' son was said to have escaped the massacre of his family, but they were no mention of him in the second book. Secondly, I was expecting to read more about the girl from Caromentis; the land of magic, but my hope was dashed. I understand that they are minor characters, but l can't help but wonder what became of them.

I like that Galen is fast losing his naivety and simplistic world view. He is showing that they are more layers to him than the poor boy from the Land of the Princes.

If there is anything I don't like about this book, it's probably the fact that it didn't excite me as much as the first one did. I feel some parts were rushed. Perhaps, I expected too much from it. Nonetheless, it's entertaining enough to make me want to read the third book in the series. These feelings are mine and in no way indicative of how others will feel about the book.

I found just one minor grammatical error throughout my reading, which is suggestive of a professional touch. I believe it's deserving of a full star rating, I hereby rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I wouldn't suggest it to the squeamish; If you can't stomach vivid depictions of violence and bodily mutilation this book is not for you. However, I'm certain it will appeal to lovers of fast-paced supernatural books, and alternative world fiction. It contains some adult situations, profanity, and language. It's not recommended for children or young adults.

I love to read series but do like when they are able to stand alone. This sounds like something I might start - from the first book! Thanks for the insightful review.

This sounds like an intriguing series with a massacre and wonderful characters. Too bad though you did enjoy this second one as much as the first. Thanks for your wonderful review.

I read the first book of the series and it was really amazing. After reading your review I can't wait to start the second one!
