There have been books right back to the 1960s! First of all, there were the Target novelisations, often by Terrance Dicks or the author of the scripts that became the TV episodes. Then original stories started to be put out, and there are very many of them!
There are also radio dramas, mostly made by Big Finish, with original stories about various doctors, including a lot about the 8th Doctor, Paul McGann (who was only seen on screen for the movie), and Richard E Grant (who was also considered as a possible screen Doctor). They have also done stories about the Companions - I have a couple about Sarah Jane Smith.
Worth delving into, if you are a Whovian.

Love 'Monster of Peladon' written by Terrance Dicks about 1983, a well-thumbed paperback.

To Eigon: your local writer (lives near Hay-on-Wye) Jasper Fforde is not Dr Whoish but just as out-there!

Love Monster of Peladon!
And I've met Jasper Fforde - he's a very entertaining speaker (he was giving a talk at our local library).

Love, love, love Dr Who and the books! Also love the spin-off series, 'Torchwood' and the books of that series. I have 'Coming of the Terraphiles'. It's brilliant! My favourite Dr Whos are the ones written around the time of Tom Baker (he was my fav Doctor).

Great To See Colin Baker In I`m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! this week. He seems to have changed his Tardis for a red telephone box now though. ;-)

Oh, for the time! Fortunately, books from the 1960s tend to average only up to 200 pages! Makes for quick reads. :D

The Target ones are good fun, often based on the TV episodes. Then there are the New Adventures - and one Companion in the New Adventures, Bernice Summerfield, invented by Paul Cornell (who has written for NewWho, and also writes comics like Captain Britain and his own novels), has been taken up by other authors and recently celebrated 20 years of existence. She's even featured in some of the audio adventures put out by Big Finish.
