30th Century: Escape is the first of the three novel series authored by Mark Kingston Levin. The author has intertwined science fiction ideas with erotic scenes in this novel.

The story starts in the 30th century. The Syndos who are genetically modified humans are about to take over the world from natural humans. Jennifer Heroes who is the main character in the novel leads her colleagues in a secret mission to time travel back to the 27th century. The objective of the mission is to correct the programming of the Syndos. As they traveled back to the 27th century, she sends her team under the command of her deputy Kylie Brown. She then proceeds to the 21st Century

She gets into the 21st century on an island in French Polynesia. She’s discovered and rescued by a team of researchers led by Marty Zitonick four months later. She fakes amnesia to cover up her past and the secret mission. Her cover becomes more secure when by coincidence she resembles a girl with the same name as hers who had disappeared seven years earlier in the region. She soon enrolled in the University of Hawaii as a doctorate student studying physics. The story progressed as she found a new identity, career, and friends. Besides, she explored her bisexual nature despite the practice being considered immoral in the century.

This novel was very interesting to me as I started. The exit of the 30th century part via the Unicorn and the part in which Jennifer was on the island until the point she was rescued. The slow progression of the plot started as Jennifer adapted to life in the 21st century. It took me time to read this middle section. It is also interesting towards the end when Jennifer time travels forward to the 27th century in a rescue mission.

The science-fiction elements highlighted in the novel are time travel, advance technology in medicine and the existence of genetically modified humans. The novel also has a lot of scientific theories and technical terms discussed as Jennifer ventures into her physics studies and research. On the other hand, erotic scenes are crafted from the main character’s exploration of her bisexual nature with close friends.

There is a comparison of the 21st century and the 30th century in this novel. For example, the technological advancement in medicine is compared when Jennifer points out that the doctors couldn’t discover the symbiotes in her blood. It means that the current technology is primitive to completely examine the human physiology in the 30th century. Ethical aspects also are compared. For example, it is socially unethical to be a bisexual in the 21st century but it is morally acceptable in the 30th century.

This novel is well edited because of negligible grammatical errors. For this good edition together with the interesting plot, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I have an interest in physics, especially about the universe and science fiction. Therefore, I liked the parts where the novel explored these topics. I didn’t like the erotic scenes but it didn’t deter me from reading the novel to the end. I recommend this book to adults who like science fiction.
