Chrome Mountain by Ben Schneider is a science fiction novel about a scientist who invents a revolutionary device. Trey worries about what could happen to the world if his invention were to fall into the wrong hands so he destroys it before he even presents it at his job. A few years down the road, a terrorist group finds out about his invention so they begin pursuing him to force him to work for their science team. Through a misunderstanding, the police begin to believe that he is a part of this group and he is forced to live on the run with the help of a former biker gang member named Sonya. Sonya has her own dark past that she’s running from and the two form an unlikely duo as they struggle to evade the law and the terrorist group.
The thing I liked the most about this book was how the author wrote from multiple perspectives. There were action scenes throughout the story and the author took the time to describe the scene from several different people’s viewpoints. He even took the time to include the viewpoint and reactions of innocent bystanders. This gave the book a really cinematic feeling. I genuinely felt like I could easily be watching a movie because all those viewpoints helped me to see the full picture of what was going on.
There was only one thing that I disliked about this book. Sonya is a Christian and her faith plays a bit of a role in how the story develops. I don’t have an issue with the religious aspect. It was just a little odd to me because the book has cursing in it and some vulgar dialogues so I assume that the author himself isn’t a Christian. It just seemed like her faith didn’t fit into the story well and it could’ve been written just fine without it. Otherwise, if the author was trying to make the book a religious sci-fi then he should’ve omitted the cursing and vulgar dialogues.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The way the scenes were written out gave the reader a vivid picture of what was going on. It seemed professionally edited and had very few typos. The only negative thing that I mentioned wasn’t a big enough issue for me to not enjoy the book. It was very enjoyable to read.
This book is more suitable for mature audiences. As I mentioned before, it does have cursing in it and there is some vulgar dialogue. Rape, murder, and abuse are lightly touched on but not in a way that would be considered graphic. However, because they are included I would not recommend this book for young readers. Overall, it was a fantastic book that kept me wanting to read more. If you’re a fan of science fiction, you will definitely enjoy this book.
