We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a wonderful read. The story is set in Voulhire which is a beautiful country that is growing at a first rate economically. The ruler of this country is King Wilhelm who is assisted by Lords in various cities. There is also the Land of the Princes where the protagonist Galen comes from. There is constant war in this land making lives for its people difficult. Voulhire though growing very well it faces challenges such as General Meldorath who seeks power and the Riva Rohavi whose main goal is to cause chaos and terrorize citizens.

Galen is a humble young man who travels to Voulhire after his uncle’s death. He is happy to leave his past life and a home that lacked peace to come to a land he believes is a paradise. His perspective on life is different from those he meets in his new home. He is shocked at how his fellow men behave and treat each other. Galen forms a friendship with Rowan who was the financial advisor and executor of his late uncle. They have an adventure as the travel from one city to another in search of steel and they come across an undiscovered kind of rock.

There are also other characters introduced in the novel who play different roles in Voulhire. Lord Eldus is appointed by the king to help Hillport achieve success by exploiting it’s potential. This is not an easy task and he knows it and as he starts to achieve some progress, the enemy strikes. There is also Captain Barcaedi who is in charge at Lorcia’s Isle and is guarding Meldorath so he can’t escape. Lord High Chancellor Midius Maid who is the head of the Mianoran Council is quite an interesting character.

I grew very fond of Galen Bray because of his great character. He is smart and is able to know what to say at different times. He treats people with respect and has a good heart though this makes him a target to those who may want to take advantage of him. I love the way he defended a miner from the horrible treatment of a foreman. The part I didn’t enjoy very much in the book was the attack on Hillport by the Riva Rohavi and the killing of Captain Barcaedi and his soldiers.

I rate this novel with four out of four stars because of the powerful imagination of the author. It is well written and perfectly edited. The magical world of Caromentis seems like an amazing place with great powers. He makes us believe in magic though it may be used both for good and evil. This book is best suited for readers who appreciate fantasy. This being the first book in the series creates the urge to read the rest of the books. I look forward to reading them all.
