Otherside by Aaron Dennis is about Adja and his missions to defeat spirits from the Otherside. Adja witnesses the murder of a shadowman, someone who can crossover to the Otherside. The shadowmans power is then passed onto Adja. Adja wakes up bloody and confused in an old Creole woman’s house. She then instructs him to kill the Snake, the spirit who killed her grandchild. He slowly learns about the Otherside and how to control his newfound power. Adja is given a few more missions, during which he meets Bear, Jackal, Rat, and Eagle. They must band together as a team to bring down the Dire Wolf, and free Bear after he is made inactive. Adja must also prevent the spirit, Seno-wah, from possessing and killing him after he unintentionally makes a pact with him.

The story takes place in New Orleans and has a Voodoo theme. Voodoo is a new subject for me, so it was very exciting to read about it. It had a good flow and was easy to read. The book had some very interesting characters. They all had strong personalities and had a humorous side to them. They were very enjoyable to read about. The scenes, people, and realms were very well described.

Otherside was very fun and easy to read. There was always something new and exciting happening. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. The book was divided into four chapters, each with a new adversary to take down. I like this because it almost felt like four short stories; If I had read each chapter on its own I could have easily understood what was happening in the story.

There was nothing I didn’t like about this book. The characters were very fascinating, it was a quick read, and everything was described in great detail. It put a clear image in my head. Voodoo was a new area to read about for me and I was not disappointed.

I rate Otherside by Aaron Dennis 4 out of 4 stars. I loved everything about the book. It was different, fun, and easy to read. I did not notice any spelling or grammar mistakes. There are 12 instances of profanity. There were also some minor drug and sexual scenes, but they were very brief and only in the beginning. I would recommend this to any fantasy lover; however I do not believe this book is appropriate for young kids.
