Official Review: The Littlefield Chronicels by Tegon Maus
A tale of epic proportions, Tegan Maus’s The Littlefield Chronicles: The Gift, is a brilliant addition to the science fiction world. Tucker Littlefield, is an otherwise ordinary man that at times is even egotistical and un-liked by his peers. It is with Littlefield’s own selfish interest to gain the King’s attention that he is accidently thrown into a wild adventure.
The story is told by Littlefield. In the beginning we find him spinning his tale at a tavern, and are immediately enthralled by what is to come. He fails in his attempt to save the King’s niece, seven-year-old Elizabeth, from an attack by the Jonda. In doing so, comes face-to-face with a man he once thought would be his greatest enemy, a Jonda named Enon. When something goes amiss, Elizabeth is taken by yet another foe, a powerful sultry woman named Kathryn. Elizabeth’s nanny uses Littlefield’s weakness, and bribes him to find and bring back Elizabeth with the reward of the King’s praises. Thus begins his incredible journey, where he is forced to bear witness to unspeakable events as well as discover he is a man he never thought he would be.
Throughout the story, Littlefield struggles with prejudice, his will to survive, and what is right. Joined with a band of Jonda that is led by Enon, there is never a dull moment for these warriors. Constantly challenged throughout the story, we see this selfish person grow into a worthy man. Their search leads them into the face of impending death and destruction at every turn. Littlefield learns to trust and work with his fellow rescuers to save the princess. Just as you think there is hope, another twist or obstacle appears. Pits of doom, savage enemies, and torturous paths lead them into the bounds of adversity and unlikely friendships are formed.
The Littlefield Chronicles is filled with adventure, friendship, love, and unlikely heroism. Maus has created a world of magic, power, and integrity. His use of powerful imagery and delving into Littlefield’s humanity brings the reader into this mystical world. This is a true complement to science fiction.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The amazing imagery and story line is so creative and addictive, which is why I don’t feel is deserving of a 2. I constantly found myself wondering how Maus thought of his settings and wild characters. With that said, there were times I felt a piece of the story was missing. The descriptions were there, but I was left wanting more. Occasionally, I felt transitions were rough and I would have loved to have had more development of the main characters, especially Littlefield. While I found the story intriguing and the characters approachable, it was difficult for me to fully connect with Littlefield. With these reasons, I feel it was unworthy of 4 out of 4 stars.
