Review by The-happy-reader-7 -- We are Voulhire: A New A...
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first installment in a series ripe with action, adventure, and magic. We are introduced to many diverse characters from different backgrounds, each possessing their own unique talents and purposes.
Galen Bray is a refugee from the Land of the Princes. He inherits his late uncle's property and fortune in the prosperous land of Voulhire. Galen soon finds a good friend in Rowan, his uncle's executor and together they embark on a journey of their own which takes an unexpected twist when they discover an object a mage seeks. There is the King, who wants his nation to thrive and prosper, however, he must be wary of those in his own court. We also meet Lord Eldus Alderman who is sent by the king to improve Hillport's economic situation and to ensure a better quality of life for Hillport's residents. He must right the wrongs of the two men who previously held his position, one of whom was a notorious pedophile, and the second, Lord Meldorath, harnessed magic in terrifying ways. While these events unfold, danger lurks in the form of the Riva Rohavi who dance their way to the destruction of their enemies.
I applaud the author for his talents in world-building and character development. His writing style not only made the book easy to read and enjoyable but also enabled the reader to visualize the story through the characters' eyes. There is a strong political system that governs the story and the history of the world. The magic system is also very complex, especially regarding Caromentis and the way magic works. I also appreciated the inclusion of a map at the beginning of the book as this further enabled me to visualize the places. The inclusion of a reference guide, complete with words, places and historical matters makes for a very interactive book! It also demonstrates the level of thought and the limitless depth of the author's creativity. In addition to politics and magic, there is also religion in this world. The plot was gripping and maintained my full attention throughout the story. There was nothing I disliked about this book.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy, magic, and action. I would not recommend this book to children, as it contains serious issues such as paedophilia, war, and death. I also would not recommend this book to adults who are opposed to reading about such heavy issues. It is without hesitation that I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
