[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord" by Braxton Cosby.]
Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord by Braxton A. Cosby is a sci-fi thriller set in the solar system of Proxima Centauri. Steel Reign is hoping to make a deal for an artefact that would cover his expenses and fuel for at least three months. However, the deal goes wrong and he has to go for plan B. He has no idea how he will pull it off, but the deadly virus, Deliterious X, lurking in his nervous system, gives him a sense of urgency. His only hope for a cure is his sister Olia who is trapped in a gauntlet game by Forge on his spaceship called the Eclipse. Steel Reign has to save her to save himself. Having become used to going it alone, how is he going to pull off a stunt like that? On top of that, there is a bounty out for him because of the help he gave to the Torrian Alliance in overthrowing the Dagmas. He is a hunted man who is running out of time, can he survive?
The story opens with a captivating Prologue. It instantly sparks interest to know how the protagonist got to that point. The next twenty-six chapters build up the reader’s suspense. Steel Reign narrates what would be happening then, but also takes us down memory lane. This allows the reader to have a background on Steel Reign and connect with him. The story is fast-paced and prevents boredom from setting in. There are all kinds of interesting gadgets and weapons to keep the sci-fi fan intrigued. Artificial Intelligence in this story has some amazing capabilities.
The author starts by giving a word to the reader concerning his writing style. This instantly pops some red flags with me, but I take it in stride. He explains that he intentionally chose to exchange words for numbers. At first, I thought that it wasn’t very significant, but it later became annoying. The story is narrated in the first person by Steel Reign, so it became increasingly important not to confuse 1 for I or vice versa. The narration is filled with slang and informal English. The book also needs a round of professional editing as it is littered with errors. Some of the sentences were long and winding, necessitating re-reading to make sense of what was being said. There’s also a discrepancy in the description of Olia. She is described as having blue skin at some point and then purple at some other point.
On the upside, the story itself was interesting. I think it would make a great movie. The presence of strong, intelligent and beautiful female characters also makes the story more colourful. Although there are references to love-making, there is no actual erotic scene described. However, there is the use of swearing words and some profanity. The reader should also expect a lot of violence as the characters get into deadly situations.
Although I found the story intriguing, the errors and chunky sentences came in the way. I advise that the author get his book professionally edited to improve the reading experience. Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord is a captivating sci-fi thriller; hence I have awarded it 3 out of 4 stars. Any sci-fi fan that is into spaceships and Artificial Intelligence will enjoy this book.
